it's a scrolling background rendered for a 320x200 game i'm working on.  what do you recon?

also, i've had a go at rendering a sprite in 3d studio and its a LOT of work.  do you think cell based sprites could work with a background in this style?

Tuomas

I know nothing of 3D or cell baced sprites. But I was wondering; why do you make it a scrolling background. I mean, it only overlaps 40 pixels, which would be easy to squeeze out, and most probably when you walk the centre, it won't even scroll that much. as in, consider, if the left or the right end of the bg is really needed to bring something vital. I like the bg though, it looks nice and clean.

The right wall is somewhat confusing. Who would decorate a blank wall that way? I would try to hang a panoramic poster or picture on the wall.

And what kind of light source is that. Look too sharp to me.

I agree on the scrolling problem Tuomas mentiones.

Otherwise it looks good. I like the texture on the back wall. The chairs do look a little stiff, though.

Tuomas, belive it or not i actualy squeezed those 40 pixels in!  i just like scrolling backgrounds.  ;)  nihilyst, i get what yr saying about the right wall, i left it blank because i thought two patternd walls would look too busy.  origonaly it was going to be wood panneld but i gave up on that idea.  i agree it needs...something though.  i actualy modeld the chair from a picture of an origonal art deco chair, some of the definition is lost due to the fact that 3dstudio r4 for ms-dos only supports 256 colours.  thanks for yr input guys!

p.s.  here is a test i did of this room, ive been testing constantly as i work on it.

Whoa, 3ds 4??? Thats some serious old school! Why do you not upgrade to 3dsmax 2008? I know it costs thousands of pounds/dollars whatever, but you can 'aquire' a copy easy enough.

Critique. No door frame. Looks like you are going for a very art-deco style. the wall on the right of the image is very boring. White is boring. You need some photo frames or something to spice it up a bit. And the roof (or lack thereof) seems very high. It must be at least 12 feet up. which is slightly strange. OOh, no windows. Perhaps move the door and make a nice big window at the front. Don't forget the frames though.

Lighting wise, it looks very boring and fake.

And if you plan to use cel-shaded sprites, use a relatively new version of max. It has a material called ink&paint and works quite nicely.

Untextured, but with a simple texture or eyebrow models and eye texuring, it would look really cool. But that was just an example of what can be done. It could be adapted into an ags sprite. The effect is there and works well.
