Alright, here goes my first post to the Critic's Lounge.

This is the logo for the team or "studio" I wish to release games under, named Impressive Owl.

Something I know I need to improve are my leaves, they just kind of bother me. I made it look better once by pixelizing the leaves layer, but that is something I want to stay away from where logos are concerned. Can anyone please suggest more ways to improve this?

Bad Voo-doo man

It looks really great, but maybe the eyes should animate a bit or something?

the moon and stars bother me, too blurry. The moon is too wavy, as if you're seeing a water reflected version of it..

Disco

Yeah, I can see how the blurred stars and moon look odd with an otherwise clear image, thanks for pointing it out.

As far as eyes animating, I want to do that when I switch my avatar to the owl, when the images is further revised.

I'll work on it some and post it later. Thanks guys!

Here's the new fixed version:

I made the eyes closer to the same size and took some of the blur off the moon and stars. The moon is also less concavey this time.

Scummbuddy

we've talked a bit about logos on this site before.

a few things you should know when making logos...

1) they shouldn't be cluttered or complicated (simple is best)
2) should be recognizable if switched to grayscale (black and white only)

these points make your image seem more of a company screen, more than an actual logo.

Here is a vectorized owl. Whilst, it could have color in place of the black and white, it can work without it. You can do this with your image, but do not bring in the background. That's actually something thats been happening in the sprite jam competiton. Submitters have been putting backgrounds in with the sprite, which, at one time would "disqualify" you.  But since the entries have been marvelous, I haven't said anything.  ;)

So, I would say, yes, I do like your image, but it doesn't work well as a company logo. Think about putting that on all your company letter heads.  What works best.
Keep up the good work!
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

I second what Scummbuddy said and also add a third point: you may want it to be more easily scalable (i.e., have detail that preserves well when you make it bigger or smaller).

I'd also like to say that the owl in your logo, as it is, doesn't make me think of the "impressive" part of the "Impressive Owl" (no offense). Now, this is just me, but I'd have it doing a magic trick or shooting laser beamsout of its eyes or somesuch. But again, that may just be me (I know that I'D think it was impressive, anyway). Otherwise, I'd go for something meaner, more streamlined and more aggressive-looking.

None taken and I was kind of thinking "Impressive" might be taken differently then how I intended. The name came first and the sketch soon followed. For a while, when I have been tossing around art and webpage ideas, it was for some reason important to me for the owl to look like that. I wanted the owl to show sort of a gentle expression.

I like your idea though Ozwalled, a scary looking screech owl would look neat as an "Impressive Owl", and it is something I will consider.

Scummbuddy- Thanks for the pointers! I hadn't really thought about it until now, but this image is meant for a company screen or intro to a game, like AGDI's spinning earth, and not as an actual logo. I always envisioned an intro with the owl soaring through the air and swooping into a wooded area and then landing on the branch of a tree, and the words "Impressive Owl Adventures (or Interactive)" So perhaps I was wrong to call it the company logo.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I also have a vision of the owl from The Secret of NIMH. But it's creepy, with glowing eyes. Maybe not what you're going for at all... but dammit, I was some impressed.  ;)
