I really like the design of it, his legs remind me of Sullivan Bluth's artistic style.  He looks almost exactly like a cartoon version of the Quest for Glory hero to me ;>  Nice work.

It's awesome.
Only thing I would change is, in the side view, bending the arm more to match the pose of the other views.

yes, QFG character did inspired us (kinda) to make this hero guy that will be main character in our future game.
these will be three views (will turn those to sprites)
i also have a side walking animation that i need to tweak a bit more and color, and we are working on several other characters aswell.
when we get some bigger progress i will post it in "games in production" part of forum.

cheers,
TheSaint

with what strazer said, pulling the arm back on the side view, so that it balances his chest being out would work and look great. very nice job with the character design

Yeah. It's just that arm thing. Also when you come to animate you should simplify the shading otherwize you'll get a lot of inconsistencies.

Both of these images are very nicely done!

I don't see how you can use these in a game though?Ã,  Even if you're using an 800x600 resolution these characters will take up most of the screen.  They're huge!!

Also, as was hinted at by Friz, animating these will be a Bee-Itch!!!

I think this style would work perfectly if you used it in cutscene/movie parts of the game, but they'll probably need to be simplified (and shrunk) to be used as character sprites in game.

Just my 2 cents ...

The outlines are very nice, but these kind of gradients only flattens the image in my opinion and plainly looks bad unless done carefully (Igor manages to pull it off very nicely).

Personally I d go for a cellshaded style or proper shading.

Sloppy modification:

Thanx for your comment. I think u did a really great job with our hero. How did u do it and what program did u use. With a little more effort it would look just like images seen on cartoon network ( Batman, Samurai Jack, Star Wars etc.). If u r interested and have time u could help the two of us with our graphics? Looking forward to hearing from u again.
May the force be with you!

hehe my artist replied while i was replying :D so i had to read his post first ...

they will be shrinked up to proper size i have already tried it, res will be 640x480 (maybe higher if we are made to but i doubt it) those images are to be used as talking view in QfG4 (whole screen) style. im glad that u like them and i would appreciate every comment, hint etc. feedback is bless :)

can u explain cell-shaded style? do u all agree that simpler shading would be better and would give better depth?and what about textures for fur? does anyone have any texture i could use plz?

regards,
TheSaint

I liked the original better..

Just personal preference.

Seems like it would be a bitch to animate though.

Loominus's is better because it's more dynamic-looking than the original.

As a compromise you could always use 3-tone cel shading instead of 2-tone like Loominus's.

I like your original shading, and I think you could manage the animations with it as long as you're careful.

One thing I should point out is that the mouth is too low in the front view. Take note of the nose-to-mouth distance and the mouth-to-chin distance in the other views, and conform to those proportions.

Quotecan you explain cell-shaded style?

Originally a cel layer with a one/multiple tone of shade on it used in traditional animation. Used nowadays mostly when speaking of 3d objects that are rendered with a single tone of shade, such as in the latest Zelda game.

Quotedo you all agree that simpler shading would be better and would give better depth?

Single tone shade doesn t give better depth per se, only in comparison to gradiental shades that doesn t take the shape of the object properly into account.

The head in the original version for instance has the same shading as a flat cylinder. The actual shape of the head, as suggested by the outline, doesn t correspond to this at all, which causes the head to look flat, or perhaps like bulging flat surface.

QuoteHow did you do it and what program did you use.

Can do what I did in mspaint really. Just drew the two tones over the gradients.

Well, mine looks more computer generated.Ã,  Yours looked (to me) more like a hand drawn image scanned in, rather than a pixel by pixel character.

When you shrink the image down, keep the layer information.Ã,  Create an alpha channel for the character, then use AGS' alpha blending.Ã,  It should prevent the white outlines.

Darth, i think he means the process of how you lowered the res of the character.

Oh ... I see!

Well, in that case:

I pulled down your image, resized it to that size, traced the outline(s) with black, and colored it in.

Not too difficult, only took me 15-20 minutes.

That is so awesome. *Alot* better than your original imo. The cel shading is done well. The only problems are the speckly bits on the hands/lower arm. But that might be due to compression. Either way, it annoys me.

im glad u like it, "this guys actions" are going v good atm aka we are finishing walking animations so ull be able to c him animated pretty soon. we ofc have studies and stuff to do but are steadily going in the right (game) direction :D

about his hand: well its done a bit sloppy coz layers werent cleared so there mite be few speckles left it wont bother u when its cleared and shrunk ;)

we are also adjusting his "tunic/armour" color a bit. post more feedback to inspire my artist :D and i bet he will speed up a bit hehehe.

cheers
