Title: Improving upon this background.
Post by: KodiakBehr on Thu 14/08/2014 03:57:51
Hi friends,

I'd love some advice as to how I can take this background for an Arabesque presidential office to the next level.  Admittedly, I could use some features on the desk, and the flag and painting haven't been decided yet, but I feel like there's still more I should be thinking about.  I'd be grateful for some comments and criticism.

Thanks, in advance!

I'd make the desk broder, the broader the desk, the more work the president can do, the more power he has. basic statesman 101. Also put a chair behind the desk.

Yeah, lots of paperwork on the desk, some pens, and one golder pen, a red telephone, a red button (that you shall not push), smilar stuff for table in the foreground.

Some vases or statues that other visiting presidents gave this one as a gift...

Green-leather (or whatever that material is) top for the desk! And if you're asking for details to add, one of those dual pen-holders with the extra long pens.

Not sure how presidential yellow stripes are (I guess you went with the oval office flavour? :D), but I can't think of a good replacement (wood? plain white with designs engraved in the corners? gold?). Either way, richer, darker wood and more complicated textures for the furniture coverings and carpet.

Oddly enough, I think you should remove the table and sofas, and instead put a giant circular carpet with a symbol on it. It makes the president feel even more superior to everyone else in the room.

(in case you don't see the picture click HERE (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TaftOval1909.jpg#mediaviewer/File:TaftOval1909.jpg))

Or you could just move both sofas and the table, somehow, more to the sides of the room. Make them angled towards the desk, and pushed against the walls.

Solid advice.  I'll keep fussing with it and let you know what I come back with!

Solid advice indeed above, adding to that:

-Huge framed picture of the president.
-Much smaller or no windows.
-Huge crystal chandelier.
-Remove Ikea sofas.
-LOAD THE ROOM WITH GUARDS.

Here's a new iteration.  Some changes I made, some I kept.  I'd love to hear your impressions.

I have yet to settle on a chair design that feels Presidential in nature.  We also haven't settled on a character design for the protagonist, but I've thrown up a concept picture from an unrelated, unfinished project so we have a sense of what that would look like.  The mountains weren't working for me, so we put the palace in an Arabesque city.

Discoveries made:  1)  I hate, hate, hate drawing chandeliers.  2)  A few studs on a leather couch can increase its perceived value by a few grand.

I don't have many suggestions, just a single one. I think the flag needs to be bigger. The pole should almost touch the roof. Looks rather "weak" as it is. Not sure the 3 pictures behind it work there. You could try and move them slightly, maybe closer to the "walkway?"? That space just looks cluttered as it is.

I like the rest. Though, I think I preferred the mountains as BG. ;)

I think it looks really nice!
Just one question - is that an entrance/exit to left of the desk? If so, it makes the placement of the desk seem a little strange.
