Title: Indy sprite
Post by: Monsieur OUXX on Sat 16/04/2016 15:54:54
Any paintover of this is welcome, provided it doesn't change the character's height (the eyes must not be moved up or down) or style (don't turn it into cartoony style).
I think it has reached the stage where written critics can only lead to misunderstandings. I strongly suggest you paint over the bits that you consider faulty.

I love the sprite. The only thing I can notice that looks off in my eyes is that Indy's right hand looks too small. But other than that, looks pretty kick arse to me :D

I'm probably not the right person to be doing this because that sprite is more than I could ever do but regardless...
I thought the hat in the original might have looked a bit big, so what I did was darken the squares were the eyes normally would be,
attempting a kind of "blending effect" with the brim and the shade.

To me it looks like he looks more straight-forward now, though it might not look as good if you zoom in on it.
Oh well, that's spriting for ya.

Not at all, it's actually a good enhancement. I'm not very good at those "indirect enhancements" where changing pixels somewhere makes it look better somewhere else. To me, that's black magic.

PS: Amelie you didn't respect the one requirement I expressed (don't move the eyes up or down) so I had to move the head one pixel down on your sprite.

Definitely body 1.
But neither hat is perfect. You need some sort of cross between hat 1 and hat 2.

I can't decide  :undecided:  Both have no neck...
They have no neck because there's the jacket's collar. I welcome criticism but your sprite's shoulders are too pushed backwards and narrow. There's got to be a proper solution.

Did a quick paint-over of the hat. Do not like either hat 1 nor 2.

Every time someone saves pixel art as JPG instead of PNG, a kitten dies! ;)

Pushed a few pixels around, maybe some parts or details will prove useful. The shading and colors of my edits are quite random and I wouldn't really know how to fix them without seeing some of the game backgrounds first.

The main issues for me were that baggy right arm and those tiny hands, both of which have already been addressed by others.
The original spirte also had a surprisingly high color count (I personally wouldn't enjoy animating a pixel art sprite with 71 colors), I pulled it down to 30, but with better color choices that number could probably be much lower.

Once again, please tell which is your favorite
1) body
2) hat.

OK I must say this hread confuses me a lot. Am I the only one to see hats 4 and 5 only like a bowl hat (http://www.scotiana.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Oscar-Slater-bowl-hat.jpg) ? How could it be Indiana Jones' brim/fedora (http://www.indygear.com/images/gear/fedora/IndyFedora-hd.jpg) ?

Body 1 ... might shift upper body to right by 1 pixel
Hat 2

No, it's not only you... but the shading of the hat 5 is the one I like best. (laugh)

Maybe a look at the "original" will help:

As for body, maybe 3, even though he seems to be leaning backwards.

Always have to have a go at an indy sprite :-D

There are a lot of little things in each sprite I kind of like. So, instead of pointing them all out, which would be a bit tedious and confusing,  I did a little pick and mix edit with some additional pixel pushing:

[imgzoom]http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab12/Mad1978/Mobile%20Uploads/indyLeatherOuxx.png[/imgzoom]

...in the last edit I tried to give the leather jacket a little more shine. Don't know if it works, but I do like it somehow.

Well, this happens when you run a forum poll :)  Preferences vary and people see things differently, especially in case of pixel art, because it leaves a lot of room for imagination. Don't you have a person in your team who makes this type of executive desicions?

For the record, I prefer other hat styles over my own. I didn't look at any reference material while drawing it and simply tired to do something different and present more options.

Just for the fun of comparing, a recent simple Indy which never found a home:
I think I'd actually enjoy a short lighthearted Indy game with simple and more cartoony looking graphics, would be an interesting change from the usual style.

Interesting, someone made the Indy line-up creative commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pixel_art_Indy_Sprites_d%27aventurier.png) and freely available.

I think I've taken everyone's advice into account in sprite #8

I've got just two very small issues with your last edit.

There are a few highlights on his left leg that look a bit like stray pixels.

The other one is something I tried to address in my edit. The zipper, fly (or whatever you might call it) on his trousers is a pixels width too far to the right, imho, which gives the impression of his pelvis being turned further than his torso.
Hope, you get my meaning, that sentence wasn't one of my best.  :P

Otherwise,  you've got a winner there, so go and get on with finishing the game! ;)

8 is definitely my favourite now. Definitely that one. Especially that hat, simply brilliant.
Just fix those few problems Mad pointed out, and there you go. The perfect Indy sprite. :-D

Yes. I actually tried to fix the zipper thing in #2, but someone revertedto the old zipper.
As for the stray pixels, I don't know where they came from. I'll fix them in the final iteration.
