Title: Island BG
Post by: Raider on Thu 20/04/2006 04:01:18
This is a BG done in photoshopby my friend. I'm trying to get it to match my style but having trouble. My style is like this:

The Background is like this:

is there an easy way to put a filter of some sort over to help match the styles?

I see the problem and let me say. you've got a nice simple and clean character there!
But you should either tell your friend to keep his BGs as simple as your style:
- keep away from the blur tool
- don't use anti-alised brushes
Or you could use his BG as a reference and paint your own more suited to your style!

Just a few more pointers concerning the BG:
- you should lose detail towards the background
- give the colours a tinge of blue the closer you get to the horizon
- give the composition another thought: where are mountains in the backgroung? Where does the beach go in the left area?

I made a fairly quick paintover.
It's not very clean and lacks detail, but it should give you the general idea of what I mean:

Hope I could help!

The problem here is that the water looks more like a painting IOW a still frame. The trees and water are already clashing in style if you will.

What need to me done is the water should be peacefull no waves splashed etc as that becomes an animated sequence.

To much coopying and pasting on the trees. Download the Family Treasure From Buloght and look at what he did screen capture if you must. Its just to give you guidence.

The pirate will fit into a more simplistic enviroment also the colors dont match of the pirate and island. Either tone him up or tone the island down. IMO tone the island down.

No filter that you can use to fix it... please dont get use to filters cause you never really get the same effect twice.

Ps: its a good bg and character. Keep at it some practice will help you guys!

Goodluck

PS2: Mad snuck in one before me ;) Good job mad.

I should say, change your style and keep the awesome background! ;D

Yet, say, Mad made a good example, but if you're to go that way, I'd suggest you add some outlining to the trees etc so that the charcter would fit better imo. Then absolutely add more contrast, as in the character. otherwise, what they said.

Enter the realm of photoshop and give this a try ( if you still want to. A better way WOULD be to draw it yourself using your own established style):

Image/Adjustments/Posterize and choose a rathr low number of colours.

Filter/Pixelate/Mosaic and try to get the squares the same size as your pixels.

Finally you might wanna try to do some basic outlines using ordinary pencil tool.

Good luck.
