Title: It was a dark and stormy Gabriel Knight
Post by: big brother on Fri 17/06/2005 09:38:49
Hi guys,

I know I seldom start threads here, but inspiration struck me tonight. Yes, the sudden urge to make a Gabriel Knight fan sprite hit me! After I crawled to my feet, I drew up a little something in the GIMP. Let me know what you think.

60x100 (2x zoom)
10 colors (not counting background)

I tried to capture the mood of Sins of the Father in this pixel piece.

The only thing I could criticise is the choose of less saturated palletes you're using lately, but that is a very personal choice and many people might disagree with me.

That's really good. Like the 'different' choice of colors. His left foot looks a bit flat, though, make it thicker and it'll be just perfect. :)

Right ... now let's make a Gabriel Knight fangame. Great sprite! and I like the subdued tones. Reminds me a little of a grown up Harry Potter as well, don't know why. ;D

Very nice sprite!
Love the detail and the colors!
And put me on the list for helping in making a GK fangame!  :D

It's a very cool sprite. I suppose you want us to critique it?

The pose looks a bit odd to me. Is he leaning back? He almost looks like he's about to topple over backwards. (From his knees to his pelvis he's clearly tilted backwards, and his torso or his shins don't compensate.) He could be leaning against something, I suppose.

I can't quite work out the perspective. Is his left leg (the one to the right) spread much wider than his right, or does it just look that way because of the angle we're looking from?

It almost looks as if his legs and crotch are from a different POV than his torso, head and arms. We seem to have a frog's eye view of his legs, but then a straight-ahead view of his upper body. This would explain the oddities pointed out above, too.

I suppose his left hand is doing that thing he does with his hair? It's not the clearest frame of the movement to choose. It looks like he's either tugging his hair, showing off a stamp on his wrist, or possibly leaning on his hand. If you could show him actually dragging his fingers through his hair, the movement of the pose would be clearer.

His right arm seems a bit stiff and unnatural. Personally, I don't keep my arms completely straight when standing. There's always a slight bend in my elbow. However, he looked that way in the game, too.

Personally, I like the pallette. I'm always impressed with how much detail you and our other talented sprite artists manage to convey with so few pixels and so few colors.

Fantastic, I wish i could do sprites as good as you!

GK is great.

This is excellent. What's most impressive is the way that the character looks like the ol'shattenjager, while having been given a distinct neo-noir look.

As for improvements, I think his torso may not be quite long enough. (I do have an inordinately long torso myself, so I might not be the best judge).

I think the most interesting thing about the sprite is the way it's clearly Gabriel Knight, but it is still in your style big brother. It'd be fun to see other well known characters re-formed into different AGSers styles.

Short torso, different length legs, large feet, arm preportions. Colors are a personal choice as Farlander said, and the ones you use, you use very well. I wouldn't change them. Also, the folds in his sleve are almost overdone. The shoulder looks good, but the rest of the arm has too much.

Its a great sprite, and yet it somehow reminds me of japanese arcade games more than of Gabe. Maybe it's the hairstyle.
