Hello everyone! I've almost completed the script of my first ags game, a joint effort with my brother.

I'm having serious trouble deciding on an art style, and It is holding back progress.
I'm actually the top student in my art class for 2 and a half years at college, and I sell prints and original drawings online now and again. But to look at my pixel art, you would think I was a ten year old drawing with my feet!

I've done this sketch of the main character's bathroom, but I have no idea how I'm going to sort it out. I know the perspective is off, but I think that might work quite well with the overall style. However, I'm not sure is the placement of the sink is too off. Also, you will be spending lots of time in this room during the game, so I don't want it to be an eye sore.

A quick paint over to show me some simple shading, corrections or colour scheme ideas would be incredibly helpful. Any advice at all really :)

Ok any idea why the link isn't working??

I think you linked a photostream instead of an actual picture (like the adress ending with .bmp, .jpg or something similar), because that's what opened when I tried to open that.
There you go (if you wanna see how the link looks quote my respond and then see the code part):

The perspective is kind of off...a lot. Might be an art style, but you're gonna have trouble with scaling sprites. Also the taps go strangley backwards. In general, the style is really nice though.
Is that the same bathroom that used to be in pixel art form?

Thank you :)  yes, same bathroom, very different style. I don't think i'm going to be able to get away with not using perspective, it just looks off, rather than looking like a style choice. Thing is, Whenever I make a 1 point perspective room it just looks dull to me. Still, probably better that way rather than like this.

hmm, need to think about this...

Hi escapade!

Lovely sketch!  You're almost there but in my opinion there are two big issues here.

Before you blame the 2 vanishing points, let's make sure there ARE only 2 points.   I removed some items from the original and I think it looks less like an opitical illusion.  (the tile wasn't out of perspective, just confusing to the eye- we can put it back later)

Looking at a cleaner version, I don't think its necessary to completely remodel the room.  Personally I love the tone, I love the coziness.

1.)  What if you did spread out the vanishing points a little?   The angle is fairly high which means we might need to see the top of your character's head and shoulders for him to match the BG.  This is a tough style to pull off. (as anian mentioned)

2.)  You used your vanishing points for the sink, mirror, and toilet but neglected them while drawing the door, shower head, faucets, toilet paper, etc. etc.

Fix these two issues and I think you'll pull off a 2 point system!

To be honest I don't mind those perspective problems at all. It's great cartoony style and it has right to be "a little" out of place :) if all rooms will be drawn like that there's no real issue here

I think the zany cartoon style works too!    My point is that there are tons of choices within 2 point perspective.  He seemed like he wanted to scrap the whole thing.

Here's an option:

Right, seriously blood-shot eyes now lol. Just tried making the bathroom from scrath in isometric perpective. it has taken me FOREVER.

Unfortunately, I can't get the direct image link, could someone who knows how post it up for me, it is on this link. Thanks!

Ok, what do you think? critique?

Lol, I swear I don't know why your links don't work properly, but anyway here you go (this is no fix, just reposting):

Few things I do see are:
- door frame is a bit too thick/long (it goes a bit too much from the wall, a pixel or two just to give it volume would be better I think)
- shadow beneath the shelves might be wrong, if the light is only from the window then it certanly is
- lower right corner of the window (especially the ledge) looks off
- shadows in the upper corner are weird, again don't know where the light source is

The style is definetly different, it depends on what atmosphere you're going for. It's nice and clean, like iso should be.

Thank you for being so helpful anain, and look! I posted the link without having to get a grown-up :D.

Ok, first off I decided I wanted a cooler tone to the colours, I also narrowed down the door frame considerably, removed and shadows that seemed inconsistent with the window-lightsource, neatened off the sink's shadow, and gave the window ledge a bit of a fiddle.

I think this style matches the game better overall, and I don't have to scale characters!
