Okay, so I know I'm not the best artist in the world. I never have been, and likely never will be, good at art. I don't want fantastic graphics... I just want functional graphics for functional games.

Below here I have a background I have been trying to work on:

I'm not so much after critique at the moment (still, I figured this was the best forum for it), (although SOMETHING is wrong with the ceiling... what is it?).

I've spent a lot of time on this picture, and I'm quite pleased with it... no, really... you should see everything else I've ever tried.

Anyway, I just can't seem to add anything to it that looks right. I've spent a bit of time each night for the last week, and I just CANNOT add anything into the scene that looks half decent.

I left my latest attempt there... a desk. A very poor looking desk and as you can see... it looks rather poorly.

It's a bit of a big ask, "How can I draw STUFF!?" But I've been looking at scenes from other adventure games, looking at real pictures, looking about in my bedroom.

But I just can't seem to get anything right...

Please help!  ??? :'(

The problem with the ceiling is the perspective. Im sure that there are some great tutorials that could help you about this, its easier than it seems
with the perspective you have used in the picture, the ceiling would be impossible to see, it would cover part of the bg, and it looks strange. So, if you dont want to redo the background, you could try something like this:

its like if you would have taken the ceiling off, so you can see through it.
i´ve seen this style in several places, and it looks good to me.
And with practice you can get better and better in art, nobody is born knowing how to draw.
hope it helps  :)

You're only problem is perspective. If you but a red dot at the middle-top of the image, you can lead all lines used (except for horizontal and vertical lines) to the point. This will make everything fit right and it should improve the quality of the room...

The roof seems to only have one fault, on either wall (far left and far right), the roof should seem to grow on each wall, but yours seem to stay the same. It's all a matter of perspective.

Although I must say that room rules....I want to eat it. :P

barring the perspective looks nice very clean for lack of a better term..

i see you have used a gradient on the floor, you could play around with that on the desk especialy on the top surface, try out all the different styles of gradient you have, see if any bring you in the direction you wish to go.

I think he used the bucaneer room tutorial to make it. It looks pretty nice to me. :D

You need to blow up that poster and plaster it all over one wall.

Seriously though, I like it. Try to keep the character art consistent with the sort of pale scheme you got here.

the perspective is very off, expecially between the two walls.   the left wall in your picture slopes much further down than the right.  also, the walls are the same width all the way around, when they should be smaller at the back because objects get smaller at a distance.  try putting the table in the front to give a sense of scale to the room other than the back wall.

here's a crappy edit.  i'd still make the side walls bigger.

I like having low self-esteem.  It makes me feel special.
