But my dad's band recorded a song with a cameraphone, listen to it, it's Watermelon man, all you swing people know it. My dad asked me to convert to mp3, but said I should not give it to anyone. He doesn't read the forums though.

Tell me whatyou think, I'll never let him know. The guitarist there is my teacher, he's great, my dad plays the drums.

hmmm...

Could there be any copyright issues maybe? I didn't download the mp3 yet, but wanted to know what your father does. Cause if someone posted one of my tracks I'm working on right now, it would be i. illegal (due to contracts), and ii. pissing me off as hell.

Other than that if it's just a hobby, sure why not?

Well, as I said, it's watermelon man and everyone who knows swing should know it, so no, it's not their song, they're just making bootlegs to hear what they sound like.

Coolio!

Funny, I was just listening to Canaloupe Island (pretty similar to Watermelon Man), off of the new Brian Bromberg album.

It's interesting how they're feeling the groove. I don't know how to describe it, it's pretty light and straight (not that that's bad or anything), as opposed to really down to earth.

It'd be cool if the guitar played more stacatto, and maybe dropped out for a solo. The song just needs more space to build. The dynamic and density pretty much stay the same throughout the tune. It'd be good if the tune and the solos built more in this respect. Also, the form could be changed up so it's not just the typical head in, solos, head out deal. Maybe have a shout chorus or possibly trading 4's or a drum solo over the changes (the rhythm section backing up the drums)?

Sounds good, though! :)

Extra points for not doing a ba-dump-tshihhh or ba-da-dump at the end of the tune. ;)

Do you mean Watermelon Man or just 'Watermelon'? If it's Watermelon Man, is it Hancock's original, or his funkier version?
I'm composing the music for this game:

Drumming seems somewhat held back to me. No matter what people say there's always room for creative input when it comes to a cover, i don't have the original to compare but the drumming seems rather plain and almost forced in places.

Then again it's a solid rhythm section, and it works.
