Title: Lo-Res Character Graphics
Post by: HillBilly on Mon 08/12/2008 22:13:17
Hey,

I've been giving pixel art another try, since I still feel a bit uncomfortable doing it. Here's a potential main character I'd like to polish before I start the animation process. What do you think? I want the character to have a slightly stale look, but I still find him a bit stiff. Any tips on how to improve?

Hehe. you love your 5 o'clock shadows.
This guy has no evidence of a mouth though.

That's okay, he's not going to speak.

Looks very cool to me. The only thing I would do would be adding more depth in his eyes. They are just plain white right now. But the rest looks great.

I really like it, too. The legs seem to be way too short in comparison to the head and body, though. Based on where you have drawn the groin of the pants, his entire leg is the length his thigh should be?  :=

Thanks for all feedback. I agree with the beard color, as well as the length of the legs. I adjusted it a bit, added fingers and a few other adjustments. Here's how it stands now:

The mouth/pupils will remain non-existent.  :=

...which is something that terribly needed change in the first place, since character was otherwise okay.

Maybe I'm too sensitive, but looking at this sprite, my own eyes start to itch and big neon "incomplete" sign blinks in my mind and it's seriously irritating...

I think I ended up with something I'm happy with. I made the eyes smaller so he looks less like an alien/deerinaheadlight, but I still kept the pupil-less look. I also gave him a mouth, but a more subtle one. And hopefully it doesn't look like a smirk to most.

I'm still open for suggestions, though.

That's awesome. Definitely the best yet. Looks like a very dead-pan glazed over person.
