Here's what I've come up to:
1x 3x

What do you think? I bet there are many places to improve and I'd like to know which ones. I seem to have the hardest time making the feet but I think I'm on the right tracks already.

What kind of game would this be (serious, horror, comedy etc.)? What characters is this (who is he, a bit of description)?

- if you're going for low-res, you should use mor contrast, I don't think this is bad, but just as general warning, like in the face area
- about the feet - they look a bit too big and not really sure if his sock should be showing, do you see people walk with their socks showing?
- about his legs - I'd movethe belt up at least 3 px and thus shortn the torso, but give more lenght to the legs
- in the side view, maybe you could put a 1px thick line where his pecks should be, to give him some volume

I don't want the world, I just want your half

Well the idea of the game is still a little abstact in my mind propably will develop alot further after I've done this character (it somehow always raises my motivation to finish a project when I get one part completely ready). The game will be a detective story from the view of a regular guy (meaning he's not a police, a junkie, a thief or a special agent etc.).  The athmosphere will be somewhat serious, Indy is the closest resemblance I can think of.

Yeah, well contrast is something I'm still learning. I'm having a little difficulties choosing colors that are dark/light enough compared with the base color but still maintain the same "feeling".

I was wondering the same thing about the feet and I think you're right they're too big. But when I comes to socks, there are people that use that kind of style too, though I'm not sure yet if I'll keep it that way.

So you think the torso is a bit too long too? I'll just change the ratio between legs and torso but keep the overall lenght the same? (thus the arms lenght will also stay the same)

I would not change the proportions, just move the beltline up a bit. He is wearing his trousers too low.

Okay, here's the fixed versions. I move the beltline up and made the shoes a little smaller. Plus buffed up the pecs.

Lad

 Good start!

I would suggest forgetting the side-view for the time being and concentrate on the front-view. The boby now looks better with this ratio.
- As already mentioned contrast should be stronger
- No-ones shoulders are at the same hight with the end of the neck. Try lowering them a bit (probably a pixel)
- Also the body is exactly square. I think the upper-body should be a bit wider.
- And don't be afraid to move the hand's closer to the body. The white cap is not needed. You can separate the hand from the body simply with contrast.

I don't want to discourage you, so enough for now!  ;D Hope to see you improving!

Keep having fun!

Brentimous

Here's my take. Hopefully it'll give you some ideas. Darkened his outlines, deleted the steroids from his shoulders, did some bleh shading, added pockets, and gave him fists of Low res rage. I changed the type of suspenders he had, but looking at it now, I think I like yours better. I really love his face, and the feet you had were fine, though a bit dark.

As Lad said, definitely just concentrate on the front view and get everything perfect there before starting work on the side. Otherwise it's twice the work and that'll just lead to frustration.

Monsieur OUXX

The front view shows a tough guy, with broad shoulders.
The side view shows a very flat guy. Muscular guys are much "thicker" than that (torso, bum)

@Lad
Good points there, especially the one according the shoulders. If I've understod them correctly most of them are integrated in the redraw by Brentimous. I'll do as you suggested and will concetrate on the frontal view now on.

@Brentimous
Holy moly, your redraw is pure awesome! It's so close to what I wanted that I'm stunned. So you added outlines, which really made a big diffrence I see. And some antializing was done too on the outlines (that's what you call it, right?).

There are some questions about the redraw though.

a) Why is inner arm (begins from the arm pit) coloured with a lighter shade? I would asume the elbow's would be lighter if the light comes above the object? The arms still look nice, that's why I asked.

b) How do you choose the colors for the contrasts or do you have any technique for that? Do you alter just one attribute from the HSL-sliders or do you play with all of them?

@Monsieur

Yeah, the guy I'm looking for is one in between the frontal and side views, which is what the paintover seems to be. :)

Here's my latest try:

I must say I'm quite proud of it. It's by far the best piece I've ever done. What do you think? More things to fix?

GreenBoy

Here's my attempt at a paint over.

What I did was change his shoulder shape so it was a bit more realistic, changed the shading in his face so there was more contrast, added some shape by shading and adding a dark colour and using the light colour a lot more in his jumper, used the light colour more in his trousers (Linked them up really, it was a bit blobby), changed the shape of his shoes and socks (Love em by the way, reminds me of Tintin), changed his hands so they were a bit bigger and the colours were a bit dark so I made them the same as his face and some other minor things.

All in all though my changes were very small, it's a great sprite, I would love to see you make a game with this character in it.

Ookki

Yosh! Thanks for your input greenboy. Here's what I've got now:

I'm quite satisfied with how the character's overall look is now but I might add the abdominal highlights like greenboy did in his paintover.
Now about the animation. What do you think? Any comments and critics are welcome, though I'm quite sure I can't add any fancy shadings with my currents skills.
