Not a tech forum question, but which one it is then?
Yeah, I made a background drawing tutorial. And I want to make it available to everyone, on AGS Resources page (If CJ thinks it's good enough).
Problem is I don't know how!

Tutorial is here:

Scummbuddy

Theres a prob with the end of the tut. plus why didnt you consider posting it in the crits lounge with the other tutorials?

nice image so far, very nice addition to our community
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Oh yeah, there was some error during upload, which cut off half of the tutorial! Fixed this now (plus some grammar mistakes). Thanks Scummbuddy for noticing that! btw, I had no idea about tutorials in the critics lounge.  :o

Pumaman

Nice work, I've added it to the Resources page. I think this thread now belongs in the Critics Lounge.

Hey man, I like your tutorial, you have a nice way of explaining,

but do you really want to teach people to use these gradient photoshop (or whatever) looks?

I really like the look of the leaves and wall, and the background too, I think this is a very good thing of your tutorial. But in my opinion, those trees and the street for example, look very flat. And I've read a lot of tutorials which say you shouldn't do that at all!

for example Eric Colossal's Tutorial:

OR

I know this example is a bit different then yours but I hope you see the point.

I don't want to put your tutorial down or anything, and I don't want to be an asshole or something, but I just wanted to tell you that :)

note that this is my opinion, and other people might find it very usefull

Hm... N3TGraph, i don't actually see your point. Eric's tutorial is great, but it has nothing to do with InCreator's tutorial. It's completely different style.

n3tgraph

I'm just saying that using the textures and gradient tool or whatever, make the image look flat and I don't know if that is the way to pixelart

oh well
I kinda suspected an answer like that

I'll delete my post if you'd like

Um, yeah, after scummbuddy told me that I'm not the only awaken one, I combed through existing ones and saw Eric's one, too. But I think It's more about taste. I, personally wouldn't say that eric's version of PS lightning is much better, It's kinda too aggressive for me (too contrasty colors together) though I don't like PS-version a bit more.

If you read my tutorial carefully, You'll see that I used NO gradients or any filters except noise. Everything is drawn basically manually, and if something's looking flat, It's my fault - or just disadvantage of my technique.

Well, as I tone hundred times in my tutorial, It's just a plain exapmle and no one restricts users to do same thing much better - I'm just explaining how to do that.

Although Eric's tutorials are among the finest we got, we mustn't let them be dictating all of our artwork here.
All too often, that particular image shows up, and I don't approve on that for two reasons, firstly because in that particular case, I don't prefer those slices before the gradient sky (but that's is just me) and more importantly, that tutorial has these prescriptive "pretty/ugly" labels which I find pretty judgemental.

So I hope people will give eachother a break when it comes to this constant comparison with Eric's examples.
I hope you get my point, Eric, and don't take it personally.

Pessi

I don't think Eric's tutorials have too great an impact on our art. However, I agree with Andail on the fact that tutorials shouldn't be compared with each other. Some of them are targeted at beginners and some for advanced - it's a bit unfair to compare them.

Anyway, I think the tutorial is great. Keep it up - there's always room for tutorials! :)

I was just using it to show the difference between gradients and self drawn pixel shading...

because you use the brightness tool in the tut, but I'll just stop it now, it's my opinion :)

I really like your tutorial and the way you set it up, I just don't like the noise and the tree gradient look a like :)

MrColossal

i should really redo that first tutorial i made...

there's lots of stupid stuff in there and the slices in the sky are terrible.. i also think that image is quite ugly now, it's so thick and there's no depth, ugh...

pessi, i think that particular tutorial has an effect on lots of people, for a few months skimming the critics lounge all i saw were people taking slices out of the sky like i had, and to look back on it it's terrible looking in that image. i've since gotten better

andail: it's opinion for the pretty/ugly thing too. it's not like i'm singling out anyone elses work and saying it's ugly.

increator: nice tutorial, i especially like the way you did the leaves, it's a nice technique that i wouldn't have thought of, i'd have just done my normal old big fluffy trees but now i know, woop!

I think what Netgraph may mean is that he thinks since the majority of the image is shaded with hard shadows... the blurriness of the shadows on the trees is not good looking to him? and that he'd like to see hard shadows on the tree, maybe? mayhaps?

eitherway woop woop and rock on

n3tgraph

what I'm trying to say...  ::)

The shadows on the trees and on the street look a little too smooth... if you know what I mean, you can see that it's made with some kind of tool...

oh well,
I'm really stopping with critics on it now :P

Lots of opinions, criticism and suggestive attitude.
So we all get better at drawing stuff and rooms. Good!
That's what this tutorial was made for!

Now, thing about tree leaves was to use a liltle cross to as a brush. I'd suggest to get yourself a freeware painting program "Project DogWaffle", which is made with  Visual Basic, and is able to do absolutely WHATEVER comes into your mind, including using photoshop filters and stuff. When using image brushes, it can automatically make them with various colors, angle and size. Like when you're spraying those leaves, they automatically differ in color, size and and angle, plus it's up to you to decide how much and how. There's millons of extra features, too, because program is fully plugin-based. This program is definetly worth a try.

Unfortunaltely, I have no idea where do get it.

Great tutorial Increator. Particularly the buildings/wall and the trunks of the trees.

The problem I see is with the lighter-darker leaves, there's no real light-source and its kinda all over the place. Or it might be that the leaves in front seem a lot less dense than the ones at the back...I can't place quite what it is but it just looks odd. The technique itself is great tho.

Don't let the comparison bother you, if everyone drew with the same style, things would be very boring indeed.

InCreator

Oi! I clicked onto link to my tut and IE said page not found. Why? Tried again and everything worked. I don't think this happens to all of you and don't let this distract you and make you posting me "link is bad" messages. Just try again (or Refresh page) and I'm sure it will open.
