Title: Main Character (1st critic post)
Post by: DanClarke on Thu 08/04/2004 00:59:23
Hi, i introduced myself in the General section, here's my first design of my main character, a young teenage girl (yet to be named). Apologies if the image appears a little 'squashed'. Hope you like it.

Wow, looks great. Only thing I can see, is that her hat might need a bit more contrast. Theres also a pixel "box" above her right eye that could be rounded a bit, IE into a backwards L.

That's pretty good!

I would suggest moving her eye a little closer to her nose.  (the eye on our left her right.)

Where's her body?

;)

Yeah it's at an angle as if shes looking to 1 side, if you get me? But i see what you mean. Body will come soon enough lol.

The eyes and general shape of the head remind me alot of Hergé's work (Creator of Tintin)! I like!

Great character! Her face looks older than her body though (i.e. the body of a kid the face of a teenager/young adult. I'd make her legs longer (they look odd), so she's taller, define her breast some more, etc.
Unless she's supposed to be a Tomboy kinda girl, and young, in which case she looks great but she needs a younger face and longer legs. Maybe the face is just my imagination, it could look fine with longer legs... :)

I went for the age of about 14/15 and she is supposed to have a tomboy sort of look. The heads a little out of proportion ala SamNMax. I know what you mean about the legs, but i think its because of the big boots, and i don't want her looking too 'lanky'  :P Thanks for the input though

Loominous: Good changes, ill look into them, i didnt realise her jaw looked so chiselled, and i wasnt all that happy with the eyes anyway  :) Thanks.

Here's the revised image, let me know what you all think in comparison, inspired by some of the changes loominous made, so thanks for that  ;)

I understand that u used 2 colors on every piece of clothing, but u might want to do some more work with the pants (maybe even with 3 colors) because as a matter of fact they do look flat!!  ;)

im not too worried about this at the moment, just trying to give poeple an idea of what the character will look like, ill be going over everything to make sure it looks as good as it can. Thanks for the input though.

thought id poke the coals on this topic, ive revised this srite (made her smaller and given her a rucksack) for the reason that the original sprite was a bit too big and she didnt look quite as young as id wanted her to. Ive also ditched the smelly boots in favour of some converse-style sneaks, but i cant decide which i prefer. ::)

*UPDATE* Im going to rework the face, as i feel shes lost some of her 'prettiness', *sigh*.

Go for the converse shoes! :)

I also see her head to advanced...Maybe you're attempting to create the feeling that her bag is heavy and she is arching the back because of it, but I'm not very sure if I would like to see that pose during all the game...

BTW, all an improvement...

Hm, i liked the first face (when it was still withouth body) the most...

As for body- i think it suggest more a child (or a slight midget, with current head) than 14-15 year old. At that age are girls/boys already a bit more developed (higher, usualy skinnier, because body mass can't really follow growth). I'd suggest to make a body a bit more stretched... or make a complete exagerated cartoon out of character (the head is still too realistic for that kind of body, in my opinion).

Here's my edit (i only stretched body in Flash, so it looks a bit odd atm).

i get what you mean here, and i'm working on it. I agree, i also prefer the 1st character's face, so im trying to get it closer to that. Ill post up some ideas later on today.

Ok heres an edit, i like this one, as it's more true to the orginal drawing, she has a good stance, and the sprites a good size. I'm considering changing the age of her slightly, as i'm sure you'll agree that she does look young here, but it bears no real relevance to the story, and i'm pretty happy with this one.

I know the sprites not perfect (why do you only notice the mistakes when you've uploaded it?) but it'd be great to know what people think of this character in comparison with the previous edits?

Thanks

Yeah! I think you nailed the look with this one. I really think she looks her age now. (The big boots _did_ help.) She also got some of the "innoscence" back in her face. Good one!

i know she looks younger but i wouldnt say that young, the sprite looks a lot shorter than it actually is because it's on its own, but ive used other sprites i have for size references. If enough people agree with you then i will change it, but personally i think thats a bit of an exaggeration.

actually i prefer this one, i made the lips wider, grew her up a bit, altered her hair slightly. She looks less stumpy now. Comments?

p.s: i know the t-shirt is messed up, i can sort that later.

p.p.s: sorry to the image hoster for filling the space with all these glorias lol.

ok i have the FINAL FINAL edit, its basically the last edit i posted, but with a little bit of 'puberty' added lol. This girls had more evolutions than a Mitsubishi Lancer (you WONT get that unless you're into cars. Even if you are it was pretty shit anyway)
