Title: Main character
Post by: Fulcrum on Tue 15/08/2006 17:29:37
He deserves a better background!  ;D

But here's the standing views and walkcycles of the main character so far.  Trying to decide whether it's worth making diagonal walk views (currently just using the up and down for the diagonals).

CnC welcome, as always.

Those are very nice. I think maybe you should slow it down a bit though.

Yeah, those images are a bit too fast. The actual walk view will be at a different speed - I made these using GIF Construction Set, and just kept the default settings/timings.

Hey Fulcrum,

That's a very nice walkcycle!

A few comments though:

The cycle when walking "up":
It looks a bit odd because the lower side of his jacket (and his butt) isn't moving, looks static, I think the jacket should 'bob' as a whole.

The cycle when walking left or right:
I think you should bring the legs more to the front and less to the back, if you understand what I mean. If not say so :)

Hah! I never noticed that before, and now it's bugging me.  You're right, it defintely needs some ass bob.

No, I do know what you mean - his legs stretch out further behind him than they swing forward when he's walking.  I'll have a go at some different leg movements, see what happens.

Here, I redid all three walk cycles, but I'm tired so they are very rough edits.

1.  cleaned up the images a bit
2.  Made side and up leg movements more natural.  Also made torso sway.
3.  Made arm movements more natural and less jerky
4.  Made character move down on a down step.  This is crucial to simulating movement.

Hopefully these will give you some ideas.

I like the arm and leg mods. :)  The character was already moving down on a down step though.  I think the bum wiggle is a bit TOO much in your version, but I'll definitely use these for ideas. Thanks!

No.  Check your originals more carefully.  The jacket literally hangs in the air in the up movements, rendering any work you did to simulate up/down movement useless.

As for the motion of the jacket it sways left/right the way it should, though you could add some more upper body motion to help it along.

Though I was too tired to do it, I'd also recommend redoing the up/down walk cycle to make it seem less like you x-flipped one leg, he seems to sashay more than stride.  You're off to a good start here, just remember to keep your shading consistent and look at a video of someone walking or use yourself as a reference.

Now I know what happens when you try to overpower Prog...

YOU ALWAYS LOSE!!Ã,  :=

On topic, Prog made some nice edits, although your sprite looked good before the edits. Hope to see more from you.

These look really good. The edits make him look a little less frantic, but I think you may have done a little too much.

Down: I like the change to the arms - it doesn't look like their flailing about quite as much - but something looks wrong with the legs. If you compare it to your original, now it doesn't look like the foot that's on the ground is moving back as he steps forward with the other one. It looks more like he's tap-dancing in place or something.

Up: It looks like he's marching or goose-stepping to me. I think his foot goes to far forward or up when he steps forward. Also, his arms kind of swing out to the sides; I think you need to make it more front-to-back like when he's walking down.

Side: There's something slightly off, but I'm not sure what. It looks like he's about to fall forward or something. I think maybe make his legs and arms need to swing forward a little bit more. I guess it looks like he's catching his step a little bit. But I'm not sure.

Don't get me wrong, these are really close. You just need to tweak it in so it looks natural. Along the lines of ProgZmax's suggestion, you may want to walk around your house and pay attention to what you do. It also helps if you can walk in front of a full-length mirror.

EDIT: Oops. I just realized the new edits were by ProgZmax, not Fulcrum. That's what I get for posting in the middle of the night. My comments probably don't mean much anymore. But I agree with Mad-Hatter says, it'd be nice to see your edits too.

I like the walkcycle, but I must agree with everyone else:  He seems a bit frantic.

Try slowing down the animation a bit.

Also:

You said you'd been working on the improvisations that everyone has been critiquing on, so would it be too much to ask to see? :p

ProgZMac did a very nice edit, and you said you'd work on those, too. It'd be nice to see how the animation is improving.  ^_^

As for showing what I've done, the truth is that I haven't made any changes yet.  Been busy at work and in a decidedly uncreative mood at home (or working on coloring some line art for a friend)

When I make the changes, I'll post them up here.  In the mean time, thanks for all the feedback.  :)
