Why is he purple?

I could recognise this instantly as Sean Connery so in that respect it's a job well done. I'd suggest adding some additional shading or removing the existing shading, as long as it's consistent. Though personally I'd go with the extra shading. And perhaps less shading on the mouth there, as it creates a mild muzzle effect.
