Title: Meet Brett Brenneman (animated)
Post by: Erwin_Br on Sun 13/07/2003 13:05:58
Meet the protagonist of Bad Timing (my adventure game in progress).

His name is Brett Dip, but I'm not too happy with his last name so if anyone has a better idea don't hesitate to mention it! :)

So, what do you think about these walk cycles?

But it sounds like bread dip... :'(

I really like the animation it has a nice, cartoony feel to it.  ;D

Trés cartooné :P*! I like this charactor. Reminds me alot of Bud Tucker (cartoony style game, obsolete). One critique: He seems to skip all over the place when he walks... it's as if you have frames missing. If you made it smoother the charactor would be perfect. And that is all!

What's a protagonist?

I agree that the animation is a bit wobbly, but that's because I didn't take enough time to measure while cutting frames out of the original image. It should be fairly easy to get it right.

QuoteWhat's a protagonist?

It means lead character / hero.

Excellent character, I really like the style of your drawings.  I like the attention to detail such as the fingers and thumbs moving

Good job :D

Exellent animation good too , but wont the outlines look dodgy if he's scaled down in game because there a bit thin??

nope not saying that at all,
just saying you could have it as a second name, but everyone just calls him Brett.

<have a friend who does that>

I like the way this looks!

I would suggest overlapping the leg animations ... the left legs does it's whole walk cycle and then the right one does its walk cycle then it repeats ... that's kind of robotic.  If that's what you're going for you got it spot on!  I would suggest making them loop together.  I  made this small animation for another thread and it's not a very good animation but you'll see what I mean:

See how as the one leg is forward, the other is back?  That's what I mean.  Just a suggestion.  I really like the style and look/feel of your character.

EDIT - Just in the front animation :)

looks great! the first one is pretty much perfect, but the front view looks like he has floppy ankles, and what Darth said aswell, when one leg is out, the other must be back.

Hey

He looks like he's goose-stepping with a bad back..
..(personally) I'd give him a more relaxed gait, kinda groovy, slouchy thing.

That's not to say that I don't like him, tho..  'cause I do.  He looks kinda naive and somewhat blissfully ignorant to what might be going on around him..  which I like in a game.

Hugs
Iqu

* Iqu looks forward to Bad Timing with gleeful anticipation..

Just kidding.  ;D
I saw your page before and the graphics are out of this world. (bad pun)  ;) Makes mine look like crap by comparison.

Really nice anims you got. His last name is rather wierd though. Maybe a last name starting with letter B?

Wow, good observation! I'll definately put it onto my to-do list.

QuoteHe looks kinda naive and somewhat blissfully ignorant to what might be going on around him.. which I like in a game.

That's exactly his personality. He's not a relaxed kind of guy though (he's a tad nervous and insecure) so that's why I don't intend on making him walk that way.

Actually I did have that problem a few versions ago, but then I made the outlines less dark. If the outlines are darker they will crumble when sized down, but the current colours are perfect. It almost looks like the character is ant-aliased when scaled down. So perhaps this is a hint for other people as well: Don't colour your outlines too dark!

My server decided to take the day off, so to say. I just rebooted the server and the images should be visible again  ;D

I also thought of a new name. How does Brett Brenneman sound?

it looks a bit jerky to me... nice tho.. very nice style.

here's an adjustment... but then the legs stop on ground and wont go back for a frame...
i suggest that you fix this, or he will look like he is dancing down the street,.,

I think he should bob up and down a lil more, esp in the front view. Also I think the legs kick up too much in both the front and side view, in a normal walk the legs dont rise or bend that much I think. But on the other hand, the animation somehow seems to fit the character.

Yes, I was aware of the jerky movement snag and I was planning to remove it. Could you give me a few pointers on what you mean with the legs stopping on the ground and how I can improve/fix the animation?

Great work on readjusting the frames to fix the jerky movement of my side walk animation, btw! You're really an animation master, your alien animations are speaking for themselves.

Neole: Hehe, his walk is quite goofy and unrealistic, but that's exactly what I'm aiming for. Did you know that I had a brief look at the walking tutorial (with the dog) you did for RoBOT back in the day?

Sure, it's on one of my old server back-up CD's. PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.
