HI.

After getting a lot of possitive respose on my game MAFIOSO OVER KILL (thanks to everyone who said something nice, I did not expect that at all), I decided to make a couple of levels more and improve the backgrounds and sprites a little.

I thought that maybe you guys could comment a little (much if you like) on these backgrounds.

This one is in the game allready and it needs a lot of work to look good:
The broken windows are not broken in the game. At least not untill you shoot at them!

Really fast work! Especially the roads.

This one is new. It's supposed to be inside the building:
I've made transpararent windows. I lthink that they look quite great. But they are objects so you can't see them here!

I think it needs more detail!

Thanks again

Yes, both your first and last background need more detail added on to them.

The buildings in the first background look extremely flat; perhaps you could make them look 3d a bit and add some shading? Also, you should remove the black pixel outlines on the road and add some noise to that and the grass. Add some bushes and trees to the scenery, too. Oh, and those doors look a bit too wide.

As for the second picture, you could add many things to spruce it up, some of these including: lamps, pictures, statues, rugs, cracks/scratches on the walls, plants, benches, chairs, people standing/sitting/loitering around, and the list goes on. You should also remove the black lines and add noise to the wall and the floor.

i think you should put some stuff into the buildings on the first bg to add depth i think that is the only thing that dart didn't mention :P

The very fact that you added "very fast work" below the first background makes me sort of cross my arms...if you by that mean that it would be better if you gave it just a normal share of attention, then why not do that first and publish it afterwards?
'Cause then you will manage without our c&c until you have reached a level where it will be cruicial to make you progress...that level isn't reached yet.

The second bg is substantially better, mainly because there is some sort of depth, which is important for scenes in an adventure game, although it's also minimalistically furnished and detailed.

Your buildings need more depth on the first one. The second one is an improvement, and looks good. Take a screenshot so we can see the windows...

Thanks for your replies...

Well, first of all I already published this background in the beta version of the game. I just did the game to learn the scripting of AGS since I'm very newbee. Everything in the game was done very fast.
Due to a very great response on the game I decided to change the grafics of the game for the better. So I thought i would start by asking what you guys thought could be better. I thought i would give me a place to start. And it allready have!

Secondly, this game is not an adventure game. It's more some kind of shoot 'em up game!

You can try it here if you'd like:

not a lot to crit really. Basically the first bg just needs some work on depth. And see the door in the front? The bottom of it doesn't connect with the bottom of the doorframe (which it should). If you were to close the door the way it is now, there'd be a good inch or two of space under the door. As for the roads, there's a black outline on the top half, but none on the bottom segment. Go for either one or the other :)

As for the second bg, it is a big improvement. Your perspective here is a lot better, and it ads quite a bit of depth. Only thing I noticed is the top of the doors don't follow the point of perspective. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but it looks like the corners rise so high, if you tried to close the door, the tips would actually be above where the doorframe is.

I think the ground and buildings are too bright considering it's night time. Maybe if you made the sky daytime, or darken the ground and buildings.
