Title: MIDI files for c&c
Post by: Elliott Hird on Tue 29/11/2005 20:42:21
"Song" - http://midishrine.com/midi/2748.mid
"Intro" - http://midishrine.com/midi/2749.mid
Best song names ever ;)

Not much to say really... c&c welcome.

The problem with both of those tunes is that they are very random. There doesn't seem to be a main melody, just a bunch of instruments being played at random.

I quite like a couple of parts in "Song", but the overall randomness kind of ruins it for me. With some modifications it could work in a horror game of some sort, I guess, but in its current stage it's too undefined. Same for "Intro", at the moment it sounds a bit too "busy".

I don't know how long you've been making music, but I recall my first tunes being very similar. Keep practicing. I learned a lot by studying other people's music (mostly m0ds', because he was/is the god of midis and he was pretty much only one who had his music available back in the days).

Thanks! They were my first 2 quater-decent midis.

Intro is what should be played at the "company" logo - think MI1 lucasfilm logo.

I'll keep working on it.

(BTW, what do you guys use for midi? I actually did this with my mouse... no midi keyboard!)

Well I like them.

It is rather apparent that you don't know a lot about music, or that you know too much. Either way you don't follow the rules, and that (according to the other thread about creativity), seems to be good. But in order to not follow the rules you must first know them.

Anyway your instincts are correct here in both of them.

Advice: What do you mean by mouse? What program do you use? anyway any program will have dynamics or velocity. Both have to do with the volume of the notes. try messing around with these. Apart from that being so randomnly done there is not much to say.

Good first try though... ;)

I use anvil studio, with piano roll hold'n'drag.

I use Anvil Studio as well. It's an excellent choice, Elliot.

Everything to say about this has been said, so I'm going to say this: Google for a tutorial on scales and key, then come back and try and arrange these notes into a key. I promise you no matter how random it is, it'll be listenable!

Thanks, (but it's Elliott ;))
I'll go google that.

Nice, especially if it's for a horror game of some sort! I agree with Petteri though, "Song" is a bit random & not very musical! But yes, I suppose its a nice conglomoration of...something. The second one sounds better, sounds a little dark and a little horrory.

However, no indication if these are your first pieces of music or not. If they are, then you've done quite well - somethings there! If not, keep practicing! :P

If you want some constructive criticism though, I'm going to have to be a little harsh.... You should work on making the instruments & the notes work "Together", with melodies, harmonies etc - anything that sounds vaguely musical. For example, play notes C and E together and you get a light sound. C and D# and you get a darker sound. C and D and, well, you just get one of your tunes. :P What I dislike about a lot of film-scores these days is that a lot of good music time is wasted by having a hundred instruments all squeal or go insane to convey horror - rather than the dark, menacing themes we all love (or I love :P).

First two half-decent ones, yeah.
