Title: monkey island style background for c and c *Edited*
Post by: Ha Ha I am OK on Mon 25/02/2008 02:30:58
 Hey everybody,

After several months of thinking about a game with monkey island 1 graphics, I finally got to work.  This is what I ended up with.

It is a nighttime view of an old creepy circus.  I am particularly happy with the wall, mountain range, and sky.

Does the ground in front of the wall, including the path, look good?

My main problem is the coloring.  Do the colors seem fine, or should I recolor parts of it?

Does it have that MI feel?

I am thankful for any suggestions.

*EDIT*

I changed the gate and made the path plain black.

Does it look better?

I also added the old Guybrush sprite for sizing (I don't have a sprite of my own yet).

Layabout, I made the door of the ticket booth smaller.
I personally think that the ticket booth and gate are a good size now.

Finally, since this is the view from the inside of the circus, there isn't much I can do to make it look more "circus-y"

Again, I am thankful for any and all suggestions.

I think it looks good. The elements combine quite well, and the colours strike me as being exactly like MI 1 colours.

About whether it feels like Monkey Island... I would say that yes, it does. Put some brightly coloured characters on top and you've got a good style.

Personally, I would not recolour anything, as it all blends in fairly well. The only thing I would say is that if I saw this, I would not think "circus" - the only thing that suggests it is a circus is the tickets booth. You might want to consider putting a big top in the distance.

I love what you've achieved with the colours.
The only thing is that gate looks too uniform with all those vertical lines.  It looks out of place against the more cartoony style of the ticket box and the rest of the image.

uhm i'm not sure about path color, it seems like there are no shadows on it, and like cutout and past on the back, the ticket place seems not completly match the bg

btw is a good work and good use of night colours and atmosfere, keep the good work :)

It's way too dark.
Here's a version where I'm actually able to see things:

The lighting of the stones on the left is weird; where's the light coming from? The ground?
Regarding the gate, I'm with Stupot. It doesn't really fit the rest of the picture.

Other than that, good job!

The ticket booth looks way bigger than it should.

With spikes on the wall and a oversized ticket booth it looks more like an entrance to a military base than a circus. To me, first feel was - a nice entrance to a graveyard of famous people. Add a circus top or a ferris (big) wheel.

Otherwise, very nice.

I would say add a sign over the gate like in an arc shape, perhaps wrought(sp) iron so you can at least put the words circus there, well backwards at least.
