Title: Music for C&C
Post by: He-Man on Sat 29/05/2004 12:58:25
Hi there...

I'm pretty new to AGS and this community.
I've just created a piece of music I would like some comments on...
I've pictured it as the background track of my first game...

I think that it might be to monotonous and maybe to sad as well. What do you guys think, and do any of you have surgestions for improvements?

you can listen to the track here:

www.5feetunder.com/stille.mp3

You might need to right click and "save target As.."

Thanks

- Your pal Niels

That is a really nice tune! It might be unfitting as background music, but It'd sure as hell be a good intro or ending-music. Depends on what your game is like. If it's a sad game then I guess it's ok, but I wouldn't know, since you haven't really told us anything about the game

thanks!

well, I thought of some sort of medieval story.
Maybe a Monkey Island kind of game with humorus twists and intertextual references to my favourite games.

After listening to my tune again I think it might fit better as intro/outro music. Or maybe a completely different game.
The hiphop kind of feel was ment as a funny twist to the sad and classic compossion. But I guess that didn't really work out that well...

I'd still like to hear other peoples oppion!

Sounds pretty good to me!

I definately get the feeling of 'ending credits' with this song.

I know virutally nothing about music making ... but couldn't this have been done as a MIDI?  It sounded very MIDI to me (which is a good thing ... I love MIDI!)

That's just my uneducated (read: ignorant) question ;)

Sounds great!

Very good work!

My question: Where did you get these awesome violin etc. samples?

Did you record them yourself or did you download them?

Well, I've used Reason 2.0. The program contains two different samplers, two different synthesizers, a loop player and a drum computer. Futher more there is a lot of different effects.
It really worth checking if you are into creating music! (And I don't even paid to say that) The only downside is the price, it's quite expensive.
The strings (among many others) are samples that come with Reason. It's recorded from real instruments note by note...

As answer to the midi question: The notes of the music could be tranfered into midi, but I don't really dig the sound of midi istruments, unless of cause it's in old classic games. But then again, I would properbly find Maniac Masion even better if had a listenable soundtrack. I've just spent to many hours listening to midi music...

P.s. I love Maniac Mansion!

I think this music would be particularly useful in an end-game or intro sequence, as others have stated. I like this a lot - it doesn't just sound nice, it demonstrates a firm grasp on compositional techniques. The only thing I can possibly suggest is to consider varying the central section slightly more. While I like the scaled down number of instruments, perhaps you might want to consider altering the pitch, melody or accompaniment slightly to avoid the piece sounding too repetative. Unless that was the aim, of course.

Feel free to ignore the idea - it's a purely personal thing, and I can't really find anything to criticise the composition. It's certainly a hell of a lot better than I would have done! :)
