Title: Music shop bg
Post by: gameboy on Wed 14/12/2005 18:55:23
I just made a background of some kind of music shop. Here:
It's not actually ready, but I would like to see some critics, and mostly - I want to know what should be in this bg (little details and stuff like that)
And I would like to know how to make the light. And there will be NO shadows.
It's created with MSPaint and little changes I've made with Corel. (I'm too noob to use ArtGem, and I don't like others) :(

Anyway, I'm gonna use it in my next game.

And - almost forgot - all paintovers are welcome! :)

Nice! But yeah, room for improvement.

Object ideas:

Cash till
Window
Stereo speakers (So there is two) and that one looks kinda big
band t-shirts
posters on the side of the desk
Ticket gun
plastic bags
Listening booth
Gig adverts

Folks will probably tell you the light is wrong

ManicMatt said it all, but what TRUE music store is complete without a Nirvana/Metallica poster? ;D

Heh, It's an Estonian music shop, so there will be Many Estonian artists and bands. JP used to be a beginnerish rockband from some guys from our class. :=
Metallica and Nirvana? Yeah, they rock!
*gameboy is singing 'smells like teen spirit' at the moment*
But how should the lights be? I'm TOTAL noob with that.

It must be a really poor music shop. It's got 20-30 albums in all.

There is a computer screen there, which makes me think that there is no need for cashiers till.

The window is behind the camera, as it should be, and therefore unseen.
So is the stereospeaker.

The rest, yes, do add them.

It has to do with how big is your character, but generally I see that it is rather empty and rather small-ish. I mean you have some records on the half bottom, with the computer screen and on the top hald, almost nothing. Just a speaker. In order to make it more interesting I would suggest to make everything bigger.

"The window is behind the camera, as it should be, and therefore unseen."

There, the sentence looks better now. ;D

Anyways, the pic's a nice start, but needs more texture/details and lighting.

* Room has way too much height. Lower the ceiling to have it standard 240 pixels of height or so.
* The counter is too near to the wall. I can't imagine how a shopkeeper could work and move around there.
* Overall, there's too much of floor area. Lower the vanishing point (make floor area smaller and shelves too)
* Walls are too boring for a shop. Textureeeee....
* There's lots of pointless surfaces. Either fill or lose them. Player has no need to see so much ceiling... Because it's just a plain, gray area.
* Hiphop, punk and metal all on one shelf looks odd. Try to change hiphop to "rock" or something like that. Like punkers and rappers standing next to each other and browsing for their music... This is weird.

* Why is word "trance" cut??  >:( >:( >:(

Like the rest already said, some things are missing, too plain for a shop, but I really think you made a very good music-shop-atmosphere, good job..

Like been said before.. not enough records, try to make a first/second floor on the left closet with dance and hardstyle records. People could bend over to grab there..

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice and help!

Okay I'll soon do some changes. I'll move the wall behind the counter more further at the right side. (Anyway the shopkeeper is a very thin guy ;D)
And I will add some stuff that ManicMatt said. And I'm actually supposed to add one window there because I've already drawen the bg of the streets where the shop is.

And Why is trance cut? Two reasons:
1. I had no room, when hardstyle was already written
2. I really don't like trance very much. (yeah, some songs are good, but I mostly don't like it)

And actually there was rock in the place oif hiphop, but I decided to change it to hiphop, because there's no room for hiphop anywhere else.

What the heck is "Hardstyle"? Hard Rock I've heard about, but "Hardstyle"?

I must be getting old...  :-\

That must be "Hardcore."  ;)

Hardstyle has nothing to do with hard rock. It's a music style which is almost like trance, but uglier. It means that the music has no melody and only loud thumping beat.

Also referred to as "tardcore"

except it has too much of a melody

Woohoo I influenced another game! Yay me!

Yeah, there is more to see now, thus more hotspots perhaps?

As for artistic ability, better wait for the others to comment. I'm fine with it myself. :)

Much better use of space, I think. It looks like a small music shop now. They're always slightly crowded. :) I love small shops.

I especially like the shopping bags, for some reason. They just make me happy.

Only thing I would say is maybe (a big maybe) put a poster or flier on the left wall...?
Looks fine without it, but it wouldn't look bad with it either :)

Ok, Taffytom, I added a Led Zeppelin poster. But I only made it to fit my style. And I made some other minor changes: a Nirvana poster, and -- for techno-fans -- a Scooter poster. But I did'nt lose the ceiling space, because then I have to lower the vanishing point and it means whole lot of work... Anyway, I STILL changed it.
Over here:

What do you think? And how should the lights be?

And the game is gonna have very low resolution, so the room will not seem so small in the game.

Good job with the posters (SCOOTER: WISTLE ON!)

Why do you have to change the vanishing point, it shouldnt matter if you trim some ceiling off, and you may not even need a light therefore.

That looks great Mordelles (Light is better....)

But it's got me wondering, the light is switched on because it's night time right? The original image looks like it's daytime, I've just realised this, now you darkened everything.

Yes, that looks awesome!

I'll use this picture in the game twice: once in the beginning of the game, when it's daytime, and in the outro, when it's dark, then I will use the same picture when it's night.

And I just noticed (Thanks to Matts post) that in the daytime I don't need any lights.
But Mordalles' image looks just perfect for night!
