Hello,
I really like programing and music, but when it comes to backgrounds, I usually don't have enough motivation to do them. But today I tried to draw my first "serious" room, and it took me about three hours. Please tell me what you think and what I could change or improve.
(I know it's not finished, as there is nothing in that cupboard etc.)

It is a nice background, but the almost same texture makes it look flat. The shelves don't look complete (some of the planks are not drawn fully). Other than that, it is a incredible work for someone who is supposed to be a beginner. You might wish to fill it up a bit more. Something on the wall, a table somewhere, a small rug, etc.
Thank you :)

Ah, of course you're right. I totally overlooked that.
I love the textures. ;)
New Version:
- fixed the shelves
- added more furniture
- added a little more shading to make it less flat
- changed some minor things
edited: I had scaled it up to 640x480, although it should have been 640x400 (as it's a 320x200 background)

Ooh, it's a really nice bg you have there!
Now, the main problem relies in colors and lines. Both are sooo blending and unclear that whole thing looks just pale.
1. Use stronger contrast! for example, keep one side of shelves as it is, but other side - ALOT darker brown.
2. Play with palette! The walls definetly need stronger and cleaner colors. Maybe a wallpaper with some pattern on it.
3. Eliminate all cases of bad antialiasing, like where floor meets walls and some other places too.
4. The plant looks extremely pathetic, in this quite modern room. It definetly needs more leaves, maybe more height aswell.
Maybe I'll make an edit later.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes, you may be right about the background looking pale. At least the shelves could have stronger colours. I don't agree about the walls and antialiasing, though. If I made the lines sharper and added more contrast it would look too cartoony imho. But I think that's a matter of style anyway.
But you're perfectly right about that plant, it looks out of place in that "modern" room. So do the paintings. Maybe I will replace the plant with something else, and make the paintings more like modern art.
It looks to me like the shelf on the left casts a shadow. But the plant has none.
Hm. A super fast and lousy edit...

A little brightening here and there can change a lot.
Notice the shelves...
Well, I didn't do it very carefully, but it's just for show.
Okay, that's much better! Thank you very much, that gave me some ideas how to improve my style :)
One knit-picky thing:
Is that a TV or a microwave?
Everybody must have a microwave in their living room!
To make it look more TV-like, attach some speakers to it, or even a antenna! If everything fails, have it turned on.
Yes. How wonderful, just as I modified the tv I thought, "hey, it looks more like a microwave".
People recoginize the things on your picture -- therefore you can draw, hehe...
Well, to make it less microwave-like, just do what HillBilly suggested, plus:
* it wasn't so microwave-like on your pic, but didn't look so TV-ey neither
* it was alot more microwave on my edit, but there's also more possible to call this a TV
So find a halfway on those two pics: I suggest just making the light-spots on opposite diagonal corners on the tv and not all around, as I did.
Here's a new practise bg, different style and theme.
I'm not quite happy with the trees, but I don't know what to change. Any Ideas?

Damned, not only your music is great, but also your graphics look really nice, Problem. Seems like I am the only one having problems about all kinds of art :-\
Mmmh... maybe the position where the tree starts to have branches and leaves could be nearer to the ground? I know there are some kind of exotic trees who look like that, but maybe it would give them a more natural look to change it.
