Title: My Background need help
Post by: Danman on Fri 27/11/2009 21:22:46
I know this looks like  ???  ??? A room?  :-\
This is the best i can do with backgrounds But i would
like Somebody to show me how i could improve this?? it meant to be a bar on the top right then 4 leather chairs on the left and a table i know you wouldn't of guessed that would you.

And this is out that room. on the right

That is a dance floor in the middle that's up some stairs. There's a mirror there too and the V.I.P thing is glass but i draw it like a mirror i know and there's a DJ booth at the right middle bottom and there's a smoking room on the left and a bar on bottom right and two tables above. I hope i make sense  :)

(Don't know if my image host is working now but the pics are showing on my Pc  :) )

I'm sure your sister will love them ;)

But if you want to improve them i'd say have a look at some other adventure game backgrounds and think about what colours and shapes are being used, your colours are very saturated and your shapes are rather inconsistent.

I can't see the top image as either your image host is having trouble or I'm having trouble with your image host.

But the bottom one is fine I quite like it, especially the tables and chairs. It might not be the most technically accomplished drawing ever, like, but it communicates what it needs to with idiosyncratic charm, which is often more valuable than technical accomplishment anyway.

I'd like to see the top one though.

It's great you've planned it out, but yes, Chicky made a good point. I quickly made an example to show a few places where you could tidy up the lines. Make sure you use your recatangle tool more! :P Here:

I'm interested what the character art will be like?

I like "cleaner" art, all these wavy lines do nothing for me, I'm afraid. ^^'

I'm not sure I'm seeing the walls on the left quite right, if the darker parts are supposed to be perpendicular to the lighter ones, you should re-draw the bottom to give depth. And it would seem the left amplifier is firmly lodged in the wall, which can't be normal.

I don't think you need to change anything else on that picture for it to be coherent and usable, even if I personnally don't care for the style.

On your first picture, the ground, table and chair colors are too similar, you need to contrast them more.

I would suggest you start smaller. Make a background at 320 x 240 and spend the same amount of time on it as you did on this background. It will be quicker to experiment with shapes and colours, and you'll end up with something you like better at the end.

I like the colour choice. As other have said, put a little bit of effort in the shapes. Other than that, BGs serve their purpose. Good luck with your game!

Think this one is better with colors and bit of the shape of the bar?

I fixed most of the shapes and I made the tables look a lot better  8)
made a texture for the floor. (carpet). I scaled a texture to 100 x 100 from 512 x 512
I think it looks pretty decent.
Anymore suggestions for improvement I am thinking of giving everything a texture?    :)
