Title: My captain, again. (update 5-3-04)
Post by: Erwin_Br on Mon 03/05/2004 13:42:41
Hi,

A while back I made a sprite of a female captain, 38 years old, in a standing pose (the left one). Today I made a walking animation, from which I posted one frame (the right one) here.

I'm asking for some C&C, especially on her face. I'm having trouble keeping some of her shapes consistent. Please bear in mind that the sprite is quite rough; I still need to push some pixels around here and there and work on the details. I'm just curious about what you think of the general pose and shapes.

I'll post the full animation at a later time.

Thanks in advance :)

Cool.. That's really nice.
I think the face is very good. The only problem is that the ear in the side view goes up a bit.
And watch how you're bending her arm on the side view. it looks like she's aiming to punch someone.

i think the jawline needs to be me more angled, as you can see the difference in the left and right images. Aprt from that its a cool character. I read the preview of the game in JA inventory, looks great, looking forward to playing it :)

A lot of the features don't seem to align very well, which is one reason she looks different.
I'd also put the lips inside the face (maybe - maybe they just need straightening so the upper lip juts out as much as the lower), move her bun further back on her head, and make the breast look more like the 45 degree view, starting lower on her chest.

The rest of her body looks great though.

Maybe the walking pose isn't weighted right - she looks a bit too far back - but I'll reserve judgement until it's fully animated.

well, the features are going to shift up a little, since she may be up higher on her heels. they'll shift throughout the walk. i really like this side view. id like to see all the views.

Hmmm, I noticed some of her features are a few pixels off when you compare them with the standing pose. I don't think that's such a big problem, though. I agree her jaw could be a bit lower.

The jawline is a bit of a problem at the moment. I try to give it a similar curve as in the standing pose, but the results aren't really satisfying.

I'm still working on the animation, which I'll post as soon as I think it's ready ;)

Here's my suggestion how to make those two views more alike. I think the problem here is, that you changed the anatomy of her face a bit too much. Smaller jaw made her look a bit more "feminine", but didn't exactly match her standing view. The changes: a bit longer jaw, smaller eye, wider head, lower lips and small change on her cheek bone.
It's not perfect yet, but maybe you could go from here.

also just a small thing that i noticed, she needs a sideburn on her side view  :)

Hey, thanks Igor. That chin's better than my previous attempts. I've added it to my animation, changed a few things again, and here it is:

It's still a rough animation, though. I need to work on her back-leg a bit (especially the shoe) and her hands. But the general idea should be visible.

What do you guys think of the animation? Can I improve her movement and how?

I really appreciate your comments  :)

I think on an animation of such high resolution and her legs moving so widely while walking, the "bopping" of her body was too slight. It looks a bit like she's sliding currently.

You may imagine she should be at least a bit taller frames that her legs are almost straight compared to frames with her legs widely open.

I really like what Igor did with the face as far as softening the jaw goes, etc.

I would give her eyebrows, since it IS a cartoon and eyebrows tend to be very expressive (compare the dogs from "Lady and the Tramp" to Keanu Reeves and you'll get my drift. The dogs win every time).

Also, her hair looks a tad odd, like she's wearing a wig. You might want to rethink the design of its profile.

The boobular region could use some revision as well. In the profile view, it almost looks like her left breast took a vacation and lost its luggage.

I think that because she is quite 'gifted' in the chest area, there needs to be some sort of movement there, it deosnt need too much though. The needs to be more of a flow to her walk too, as it appears as if shes limping at the moment. Keep at it :)

I like it very much but it seems that her head isn't moving much. It's just going up and down. And the feet are barely coming off the ground, it looks like. All else great though  :).

Looking good :)
As Gilbot pointed out the "bopping" movement of her body is a bit too small and sparse. I think the body should move up and down constantly (depending on the position of her legs)- as it is now, the body stays still for a few frames and then suddently go up. It kinda interrupts the flow of animation.
Another minor thing that could be change is the backward movement of arms. Judging by the "forward" movement, arms swings a bit too far back.

It looks good, but something in the hands movement doesn't look good. Hmm how would I explain it... oh yeah! It needs easing! ( http://www.sylpher.com/kafka/tutorials/easing.htm )
I think she also need more bopping when she walks as stated earlier.

But keep it up!
