I'm not the best critic, but I think it's great. I do have some suggestions:
- It's impossible the tree came right out of the stone ground
- The texture of the bushes should be replaced with a better one.

Overall, some more detail would be better. I have to admit that for a first background, you did a great job

It's very atmospheric and interesting scene. But--

- house walls could use some bump mapping
- the light source(s) are not seen? But what's these light spots on house then?
- Bushes are indeed crappy. Try to make some real bushes or use a texture with much stronger contrast and again - maybe some bumpmaps
- the grass growing out from hedge? this is strange.

Sweet, but that wood texture on the window is kinda crappy, it sorta destroys an otherwise great pic.

I think the texture on the bush/shrubs is a nice texture, it's just that the model is too smooth.  Try adding some polys to it and a noise filter to add some 'randomness' to it's shape.  That might help.

Also, the shadow under the window makes the window appear apart from the wall.  It feels very separate to me.  Might want to figure out why it's doing that (or move the window back if that's why!)

Other than that (and what the others have said) I think it's a great start.

Okay, after a slew of layman's critiques, here are some suggestions from a fellow 3D artist.

Walls/Bushes - try loading your bump maps, (if you don't have any - use your textures), into a displacement channel.  This will give your wall depth from an angle, & make your bushes look bushy.

Lighting - I think it looks weird because it looks like it's the only light in existence.  Just make a big sphere & give it a purple glow to add some night-time illumination.

Jeez, I hope that's a joke!

thanks to all , i appreciate suggestions, and i'll try to modify them.
i have just been playingÃ,  with 3d max for a few days and still learning the big features of this program.

Lol, I love the 3Dsmax stock trees. :)

It's tough, but eventually you want to try to get that "dirty" realistic look to everything.

yeah, It wasn't meant to be serious.  It's like when you're with a group of friends playing video games & you say, "Now it's time for the master to school you in the game."

Just Uber-speak, for fun.  Sorry if it's misinterpreted.  I often forget what a Pacific-American dialect must sound like to other people.  Trash talk is pretty common here.

well....
-The floor is too flat, you should try a bump map or even a displacement map.
-The tree looks nice, but if you are gonna use this for a background in a game, you should use models with much more detail, after all, they don't need real time rendering. Ah, and the tree is growing from the pebbles? That could be fixed.
-The bushes are to blocky, you can try and make them all like round with noise, or download one of those programs to make 3d plants and make some.
-The window looks weird, maybe the texture is causing this. And try adding some reflection to the glass, or some more if it already has. Maybe making the glass a bit translucent will help too.
-The wall, same as the floor,  and i forgot! the floor tiling is too obvious, but it works quite well in the wall.
-I don't exactly know what kind of lights you are using, but they seem to be the "standar" ones. Try using raytracing or something like that to get a more realistic light. And that will also improve your models and textures. Using the light you use know, makes it look too CGfor my taste.

Well, that's all
bye

Well most everything technical about your scene has been pointed out already...

but from an AGS perspective, a character walking around with that kind of lighting pattern is going to stand out like a sore thumb.

Also, a palm next to a maple?

Maybe it's just some optical illusion, but the window frame looks a bit trapezoidal,
and this fact, together with the shadow under the window produces the impression
that the bottom of the window is tipped up related to the top.

I think it's a nicely lit image but stuh505 has a good point. You could try moving your keylight to the left to throw the tree's shadow against the wall, or add a supplementary fill to diminish the shadow - though that would probably ruin the scene's atmosphere.

Presuming this is a night time shot, you could make your lamps a little more yellow/ornge - streetlights produce almost totally yellow light and most artificial lights are slightly yellow. This might not work, but it could.

Make the windows transparent and have a flat suface behind it with a texture mapped picture of a dark living room or some cutains on it. that will give it some extra depth without having to model the interier.

Looks really awesome!!!!

-The window looks like there is a peice of paper behind it

-The bushes should have little peices outside of the normal hight level

W00t, W00t!!

Considering that txarly only has three posts (all in this thread) and the last one was from 3 months ago, I'm inclined to think he's no longer around.

Though he was active about a week ago so who knows ...
