This is actually a remix of one of my existing tunes but I thought I'd hop on the chiptune bandwagon and give it a go. Would really appreciate any feedback about making it sound more NES-appropriate :-D

Cool, if you are looking for a program that gets close to the NES sounds. I can say musagi (http://www.drpetter.se/project_musagi.html) might be interesting. To quote the maker: "The default instrument is xnes, which is a rough simulation of the NES sound hardware".
I have been using musagi a lot the last years. Not for chiptunes per se: you can create all kinds of things with it. Custom synths, support of wav samples and what not. But most people seem to use it for chiptuuny tunes.
It's fun, the only downside I find is that it's hard to restructure large songs.

I write my compositions in Sibelius and then import into Cubase. For this composition I used the Peach and Toad VSTs created by http://www.tweakbench.com
I think the non 8bit version was a bit more eerie in an organs playing kind of way, while the non8bit version has kind of gothic/romantic feel...that probably doesn't make sense, but in any case I like it.
Made me think of Fearless vampire killers for some reason. :grin:
Well musagi is free and uses notation that is a bit closer to "normal" notation than the usual old school trackers.
Hehe, I always wonderd if Sibelius (even when you buy it) and such didn't have weird licensing regarding the sounds?

I dont know how relevant or correct that is. But those kind of things are enough to keep me away from Sibelius.

Tamatic: As I said, I use Sibelius as my notation program and then export the MIDI so I'm not actually using the Sibelius sound samples. It is an interesting discussion though, thank you for sharing.

This sounds very nice! It definitely has that special 8-Bit feeling, though I'm no expert on NES sounds.
I'd probably use more diverse sounds for melody and accompaniment, as this is what I like better in the original version. The mood is actually very different. The original version sounds very low key and depressing, while the remix almost has a baroque feel to it.
Thank you for the feedback! It's amazing what changing the synths used can do to the same piece of music isn't it? It sounds different again as a solo piano piece.

I loved it. For some reason it reminded me of few horror games I have played. Like an 8-bit Clock Tower theme or something like that. But keep up the good work! :)
