Hello all,

I would like your help with a face sprite I am creating, I'm not very experienced with sprites and I am finding it hard to give it the look I want.

Here are a few things that I would like the sprite to appear.
1. Rugged look (a young rascal style).
2. Maybe some facial hair, cuts and grazes.
3. An appearence of heartlessness (if that makes sense to you)

I basically want this charactor to look juvenile but keep a masculine appearance.

Thankyou in advance...

OK first of all , his mounth looks like a chocolate coockie. I dunno if that's caused by the color or the shape, maybe both, but either way it needs some changes. Then I noticed the black outline on his head. Maybe you should rather change it too dark brown.

I don't really know how to get the things you want to acomplish so I suggest you try to find some picture with google that suits what you want and try to draw it like that.

Hope this helps in some way.

Ok , thanks for the suggestions.

I had just modified those points.
Its an unfinished sprite so I was intentionally overlooking those small floors, there is plenty to do with it I agree but I suppose I was expecting someone to help me out a bit in terms of maybe saving the picture and fiddling about with it, then show me a thing or two with a result.

I could play around with it for hours but if someone was to put a bit of their experience into it, that would be a great kick start.

Here are some quick paintovers, but I got carried away and after rereading your description, they are completely non-helpful because it's not what you're going for.  I'll post them anyway, in case they can possibly aid you in some way ^_^:

1. your original
2. my attempt to make him look more juvenile
3. my attempt to make him more rugged (using #2 as the template)... but now he looks too old...

So, not what you were going for, but I hope you get something out of them :-\

Oh, and a forum tip: it's a better idea to save in a jpeg gif or png format so that there is no colour distortion; it makes it easier for others to do paintovers ^_^

EDIT: GIF or png format, not jpeg!  oops ^_^

Hey, Thanks Mash.

I really like your examples, your eyes are great, I can clearly see how to improve certain features of the face.

My cheekbones were a no-no,
Eyes too defined around the edges.
I shouldnt have added colour to the lips.
Etc etc...

It seems that keeping it that much more simple or what would appear to be simple actually works wonders.

Glad to help ^_^.  However, there's nothing wrong with doing those things you listed... perhaps just make them a little more subtle.  For instance, if you want to have a character with a craggy, thin face, then shading in the cheekbones would help in achieving that look.  I took them out not because it's a "no-no", but because I was trying to make the face look younger (ie rounder).  Defined eyelashes and coloured lips all have their place too; it all depends on what kind of character you're going for ^_^
