It was a good first sprite, and here are a few guidelines that you can follow to greatly improve your skill:

1.  If you are going to do lighting, use a consistent perspective.  Try looking at how the light hits you in a mirror or something if need be, but for most 2d shapes lighting is rather easy to do.  Highlight the side of the character the light source is on as well as the side of any limbs that could possibly be hit by the light (if the leg sticks out a bit, etc).  Darken the opposite side.  If the light source is overhead, darken beneath areas that stick out (below the nose, below the chin, below the knee, etc) and lighten the areas above.

2.  If you are doing a pose that has one leg out farther than the other, the position of the rest of the body needs consideration.  In your sprite you have the right leg of the character down lower than the left and the left arm down lower than the right.  If his right leg is down, his right arm is down farther as well.

To have the image display larger, use [img width=x height=y] instead of [img], where x is the desired width (a multiple of the actual width for best results) and y is the desired height (a multiple of the actual height).

Hope this helps.

You've improved the lighting, all you need to do is work on the jagged look of the sprite itself.  Try to avoid hard angles like you have on his shoulders, smooth them out and make them look the same (unless the character is in a pose that would require seeing less of one side of him than the other).  Nice work.

Not bad at all! You've improved your style quickly! Go on this fast and you'll draw very good chars.
