Quick C'n'C on a tiny tiny sprite

hello, made these tiny sprites for a job interview and wondering which you prefer

the shoulders is what i'm talkin' 'bout

 

 

basically the difference is in the first one his shoulder/arm moves back 2 pixels and then to the middle and then forward 2 pixels, and in the second one it moves back one pixel, next frame it moves back again, next frame it moves forward and so on, so instead of clicking it flows, but i don't know if it's better or not to flow or to click...

I prefer the first one - the little pause on the shoulders works better for me with the quite rigid arms.
It looks quite stiff though - he could really do with a pixel of head bob, or some sub sampled jiggery pokery.
In such a small fluid sprite, any stationary pixels really jump out.

To demonstrate it at the interview, have him walk forward against a background - that should hide any remaining problems...

And floppy hands - he needs floppy hands :)

woops, i'm a dumb bunny, i forgot to add the bounce, he looks much better now i must say

as for the interview, i have to pass some tests first this being one of them, i just make them and mail them off and then they hire me, so i can't really put it in a setting since that's not what they asked for

Looking at them small, the 2nd one looks more fluid.

Second one does look more fluid.  Although the first one looks more powerful and meaningful.  Like he has a purpose to walking.

There's a slight little shading 'bump' I notice when the right (front) leg is all the way back the hi-light seems to be missing a pixel and if you watch the darker shading from the back leg jumps onto the front leg.

Do you see what I mean?

Other than that, rock on.

Great! My choice is the second one. My only gripe is about his head, that seems a bit too fixed and static... which makes (otherwise perfect) animation a little stiff and not as realistic as it could have been. I'd sway (or rotate) his head just a wee bit.

As Darth said... Both are perfect, but if asked to do different things.... The first one is the shoulder movement of a naughty man, and the second is perfect for a regular guy...

Amazing what two little pixels can do...

I was trying to avoid critising the great but theres somthing i noticed. With both animations on the back foot it seems as though he is just sliding his foot across the floor and not atachually picking it up.

i think that the knee should bend a little and that the foot should mve up about one or two pixles.

but that may be due to staring at it for too long ;)

Mmmm... if it's allowed ( ;)) To crit it overall, I'd remove the whole sole in the shoes... It looks he is waling on platformed shoes, or something like that... (Unless Mr. C wanted him to seem to be walking in platform boots...)

I like the second animation because the first seems abrupt and fast-paced, the latter seems more realistic and relaxed.
Once I killed a man. His name was Mario, I think. His brother Luigi was upset at first, but adamant to continue on the adventure that they started together.

Whoa. These sprites really remind me of the style and animation of the old Flashback game. It's pretty cool, they both have their own style though. The first is relaxed while the second is power walking and shows a sorta angry feeling to it.

Both are good, keep up the good work and post some more stuff. :)

I'd have to say I prefer the first. The momentary pause is a bit more realistic.

Both are great; I'm assuming they're for a GBA/cell phone deal?

Nice work. It has a Flashback sorta vibe to it.

Edit:

I didn't even notice the previous post cited a Flashback reference. In fairness, I was playing Flashback yesterday on an EMU, and it's largest similarity is in the fluid, realistically changing shadows that fall onto the character.

Also, Flashback seemed more pillow-shaded than this. Most likely due to all the extra landscape they had with those sprites. Still, I like yours better!

Yeah, it reminds me more of the PC version than the consoles versions since the PC version was animated alot better and was generally alot better. Although I can't play it anymore on this XP computer, even with a DOS emulator. :(

for me I like the first one because the continued motion of the arm stands out more, the second one because it looks more smooth... argh! i dunno!

for such a small sprite number 1 almost makes sense because the dramatic colour change from shoulders forward to shoulders back is more eye catching...

darth: i have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, i looked the sprite up and down for your extremely awkward description, mayhaps you could elaborate? hehe

igor: I tried but I really don't think the head can do anything, I can't really rotate it since he's only 3 pixels long in the head area, it looks like he's moving his head 90 degrees to either side, so unless you have some crazy magic trick that i don't know about, i think his head is stuck as it is

penguin, the job i'm applying for is a company that makes cellphone and PDA games so you were close.

Here's what I meant;


Now, oddly enough, in the 4X view, it doesn't leap out at me, but in the actual sized view it does.  It almost looks like the back leg is 'overlapping' the front leg.

I am certainly no expert here, but it seems to me like maybe one of the hi-light colors should fill that gap instead of the shaded back leg color??

It's still awesome ... just that tiny little pixel I noticed.

Damn, i was looking at zoomed version and didn't really noticed how small is the actual sprite. Even more impressive how you managed to put so much details on such a little sprite.
