Title: My first character sketch, what do you think?
Post by: Postmodern_Boy on Tue 02/05/2006 08:00:33
im new to this, so here is a rough sketch of the first character i have ever tried to make for a game.Ã,  She is a 18 year old genetically modified girl/cat i drew for a cyberpunk sci-fi style game that i want to make.Ã,  what do you think of it? how can i improve it?

very nice, I  like the flat shading, an entire game in this style might be cool. as for improvement, she looks a little rigid, remember that no one in real life constantly stands at attention, or that their stance is rarely symmetrical, angle her feet slightly differently and bend her arms a little, I look forward to seeing more

Please don't pick your colors while the sprite is on a white background, it'll throw you off.

use a vector-based drawing program...

and I wish you luck with the animation of the tail. I hope it doesn't become something of a hinderance that bogs down your animation attention.

Speaking of the tail, in the side view it's pointed in a different (backwards) direction than in the front and back views (where it's sideways). When she turns from front to side her body will change viewing angle but her tail will just stay where it is.

thanks for the tips.Ã,  i tried to give her a less stiff pose and i will no longer use white as a background color.Ã,  Here is an improved rendering of my character that i used both of your advise on.

this is how she looks in a background i threw together real quick just to see what she would look like with a building behind her. it is NOT supposed to represent the style i will use when i start doing my backgrounds.

And yes i am using a vector program for my drawings.

oh and on more thing. this is my start on her walk animation.Ã,  its still pretty ugly so dont laugh to hard. this is my first character so i am a newbie at this, and i didnt think about how hard it would be to animate the combination of a skirt a long jacket and a tale.Ã,  :-\

i didnt even think of that.  i will have to try and figure how to make it look right.

Her arm blends in to her jacket too much in the animation.

Most of the people move their arm more to the "front" than to "behind". IMO walkcycles look better if they try to copy that.

It's a small thing, but I would also add that it would look better if the tail come through the skirt at its base (as if the skirt had a hole) rather than out from under the skirt.Ã,  During the walk cycle the tail with respect to the skirt looks a bit strange.
I think your character is coming along nicely though :)

i use adobe products but those are expensive unless you can get a student discount or use them in a schools computer lab for free.

i just did a google search for "free vector programs" and inkscape looked like one of the better ones.Ã,  i have never tried it so i cant recommend it.
http://www.inkscape.org

also i have heard people say that this free program is good for bitmap formats
http://www.gimp.org/

i have never used either of those programs, so i know nothing about them other than what i just read on the homepages and a few things i have heard from people so if anyone knows any reasons you shouldnt use them or better ones that you should use please name them.
