Title: My first character sprite...
Post by: Antonio on Wed 20/02/2008 10:16:18
Hi all,
this is my first effort at a sprite and I was wondering if the size is correct for a 640*480 game?
As you can see, I still have much to learn about shading and the folds in the clothing!!
C&C much appreciated...

Sizes depend on the scaling, so there's plenty of freedom there. With normal scaling your sprite would appear pretty normal in the foreground of a screen.

There is one rather common school of sprite drawing that uses very clear cartoonesque characters, regardless of the realism of the background (such as Torrin's Passage, Monkey Island 3 and so on) so there's no real need for shading and excessive details unless you want to.

Speaking from a purely aesthetic point of view, I would say his collar is a little bit odd-looking... it is far too wide - looks like his shirt is bursting open from the top. Also, his right hand is a bit too rigid - it should be more relaxed...

Thanks Andail, i'll get rid of those shoddy creases now...

Hi Em,
The collar is actually an aesthetic choice i've made as my game will be set in the 70's. (I've made it wider since!) He has the thumb hooked in his pocket thing going on but I know it needs working on.
Thanks for your comments...
