I thought It was about time that I tried my hand at actually drawing a character, and this was the result.

Ã,  Ã,

2x

I'm probably least happy with the side views, but I've basically gone as far as my limited (read non-existent) knowledge of pixeling will take me. I'd like to hear what you all think and how I can improve it.
Comments and paintovers are of course welcome.

Thanks in advance :)

- From the red lines, you can see that various things don't line up across the different views (in this case, the feet, bottom of the hands, and hair line). You'll want to make sure everything is consistent among the different views.

I also did some edits to the front view:

- Removed the whites around the eyes
- Added a nose
- Changed the left hand (his right) to make it look less "Lego-esque". Still doesn't look great, but hopefully you get the idea. The arms could probably also be a little longer.
- I noticed the skin color of his hands was different from his face. I changed the hands so skin color is the same everywhere. You'll want to check the rest of your sprite to make sure your colors are consistent

Not bad for a first effort. I'd also recommend going through the Critics Lounge and looking at comments for previously posted sprites. You can learn a lot by studying what others have done what improvements have been suggested.

Looking good. I think you should round his legs a bit. They seem bit to straight right now.

Those Lego-hands are teh awesomest..

What you have here is a good blend design, the character could be about anyone. This can be functional with a close-up in for instance the speech, where you can work over his facial traits more. Or to keep him a tabula rasa, I dunno, but as far as character traits go, this gent is boring. And he's a doctor(?). Many doctors are boring so you're spot on! But some character traits would spice it up a notch. Perhaps using postures. Work with the character in different poses. How does he sit? Walk? Hos does he fight with the soda dispenser? Try to think about that..

Coolio

Thanks for the crits everyone. I'll try to work on the character when I get some time.
EagerMind: I'll try to make sure everything matches up, but don't bag teh legoness ;).
MadReizka: Thanks! I think I see what you mean with the legs. They do look a little flat. I'll try to work on it.
2ma2: He's actually supposed to be a scientist/inventor type guy. Not the labcoat type though. Anyway, I'll see whether I can give him some more character; but I don't know how I'll go (haven't really done anything like this before).

We all have to start somewhere. You could work with the eyes and mouth to make him less generic, or work with props such as glasses, an odd hairstyle or beard..

Ok, so I started to play around a bit with the character.
Here's what I came up with:

I was thinking that maybe he could be the type of scientist/inventor type guy who has been in some horrible accident during one of his projects. He then loses his job at [insert name of corporation here] and gets semi-segregated from the community because of his oddities. Now he works in his basement on his greatest invention yet! [insert plot here]

I don't know. It could work. one thing is whether he looks too evil to be a good guy. On the plus side I got to keep one of his lego hands ;D.

I also changed a few other things as well:
-changed one of his hands to look less 'lego-esque'
-lengthened his arms by one pixel
-changed his hands in the side view
-changed his feet in the side views and slightly on the back view
-changed his hairline in the side views to match up more with the front and back views
-increased the contrast slightly on the legs (hopefully they look less flat)
-oh, and I matched the hand color to the face color
I think that's about it.
What do ya think. As I said I was just playing around with different ideas.

Dude, it's Cyclops..  :=

Ammediatly some characteristics. I can't help but wonder, how did he lose his hand? Is he mad about this? What would he do now? Quite possibly your average mad scientist with a vengeance upon the world.

One notion, the beard won't follow through under the ears but rather go up along sideburns to join with the harline. It looks kind of odd, like he's gotten a really poor faclift job.

You sure that's a beard? Looks more like som kind of mask to me. Could be wrong tough, it's a little blurry.

ManicMatt

I'm pretty sure that's a mask, and if it is, nobody wears masks by strapping it around their lower neck like that! At first though, I too thought it was a beard. Hmm..

Surely it would be like this?

skyfire2

Spoiler
Not to mention the fact that the back of the guy's neck isn't consistent with the mask.

Just to clear this up. Yes it is (suppose to be) a breathing respirator/mask thing! I see what you mean about the shape though.
