Title: My first low-res character art

This is my first foray into low-res character art.  Any thoughts?  I didn't put a definite "mouth" on his face...i'm not sure if it's necessary.  How's the shading?  Is his left foot screwed up?

Edit: I've added a second character.  A small boy.  Any C&C on both characters would be helpful.

Check the BBCode and smileys reference (link above the edit message box when posting) for info on how to enlarge images and a bunch of other stuff.

Looks pretty darn good. I don't think the mouth is necessary. Maybe the limbs are all a bit short, or maybe that's what you were going for as a style? The back foot is a bit of a club.

Yeah, I kinda want a small mega-manish quality to the next game.  I figure if I'm going to go low-res...why not go all the way?  I will work on the foot a bit more...there are just so few pixels to work with, it's difficult.

Thanks for the tip on the BBCode...I should have checked that first.

Hi Anarko,

i really appreciated your chars in the Emily Enough game!!! This two new sprite are really good and show your style well in a reduced res.

For the first one i agree with steve about the limb lenght (too short, at least the right one) and i think you should work a bit on the feet (left in particular). For the mouth also i agree with steve, looking at the shading the mouth seems already there and you coul work only on the animation to keep this effect in talking.

PS: how do you define the difference between low and high res character/sprite?

They look very nice, especially if you're going for a darkish look.

The skin coloring is a bit odd otherwise, unless of course it's the game style.

I like the style, and the posture seems good, the only thing I can think of is the number of colours.
(EDIT: That is, they would benefit from less colours and higher contrast between the colours.)

Also, the eyes are quite low on the little boy.
Otherwise fantastic work I, for one, love the style.

Because wroking in high res is probably too much work.  ;D

Sorry I haven't written back, I've been out of town.

You think they have green faces?  Are you sure it's not just a trick of the eye because of the green background and green shirt?

LJUBI: Like aussie said, working in higher res is very time consuming.  These low-res chars were made in a fraction of the time it took me to make just one character in EE.  As cool as higher resolutions look, it's just unmanagable for one person to make a good looking game in a reasonable amount of time.

Pale grey is more like it. It just seems green because of the background.

The little boy's head looks ridiculously round. Other than that, me gusta. I'm interested in seeing what's coming up.

Yeah, the boy I did very quickly and he needs much more work.  I actually need to make him look more depressed, sickly, and mentally handicapped.  Looking sickly is fine, I guess I could experiement with real skin tones though.  I just wouldn't know where to start.

you might want to try somem green shades then. Don't work in real live, but in pictures it helps

My attempt... An enhaced (less bright as well) LEC pallete... With lots of pixels, in ProgZ's style, this guy is creating style...  :)

Look looks good Farlander...I'm definitely going to play around with real skin tones.  That's a great starting pallete.  Thanks!

But maybe too bright for your games... but it is just a matter of selecting the pallete and play with the photoshop controls...
