Title: My first project. Critic wanted
Post by: yarooze on Fri 14/04/2006 23:28:50
Hi!

I try to make my first game with AGS and make my first characters. I showed then to some friends, they find them good. My wife said, they are not good enough...Ã,  ???

So, I need some independent but qualified critic.Ã,  :)

This is Robin (an 14yo highlander boy):

This one is Nifirtist (she isn't really ready yet):

If you understand german, you can find more about them here:

Looks and sounds very good to me. Don't take your wife so seriously, she just might not know what she is saying. :p

The sprite is great, although it's appreciated on this forum to post your artwork in a different format than .bmp because of their loading time and size (.png or .jpg are better for example).

Welcome to the forums!

If you save them as .jpg I will tear the cruciate ligament from your kneecaps.

Errrhmmm.... sorry, please use png or gif.

I don't see why your wife would think they're "not good enough". Is she some sort game art gallery curator?

Does she have you chained to the radiator? I can see it now...

"No, no. Still crap. Make them again, this time: better!"

have you looked at what yodaman produces? Jeez, these are quality. Good style, good animation. The egyptian char is especially good. One critique, is the standing frame on the boy annoys me a bit, dunno why.

Thanx a lot, I didn't know, that I'm so good...Ã,  ;)

but really, there are something I would like to make better and since you are experienced game makers,Ã,  8) I hope, that you can help me. I have two questions about Robin's sprite:

1. Since I'm about to be happy with the front and back animations, it seems to me that the side animations looks a little bit odd. I don't know what exactly and I was not able to improve anything. Are they ok or you can show me my mistakes?

to Layabout: which frame do you not like? this one:
http://www.alionas.com/images/robin_front__stil_cool.bmp
I thought, it is one of the best...Ã,  :(

2. I've made the speaking animation for him:
http://www.alionas.com/images/speak1.gif
http://www.alionas.com/images/speak2.gif
http://www.alionas.com/images/robin_front__stil_cool.bmp

Since I find it ok, it looks a little bit boring. I know, that the coll game makers like youÃ,  := move the heads of the sprites as they speak. I've tryed to do that:

http://www.alionas.com/images/speak3.gif
http://www.alionas.com/images/speak4.gif

Looks really odd...Ã,  :-\

What would you do? How do you make the speaking heads of your characters?

PS. No, my wife didn't chained me to the radiatorÃ,  ;) But she want, ALL that I make to be perfect...Ã,  8)

These look very nice!

The obvious problem with the profile walkcycle is that he's not really walking - he starts from a stand still, makes 2 steps, and comes to a halt, then starts again.
