Title: My new character
Post by: Raider on Sat 24/07/2004 03:51:02
This is my second go at making a character. I am going for the steriotypical 'Captain America Macho Man look' but with some realism
Any sugestions on how to make him look cooler.
I want him to look like a casual type soldier. I hope you know what i mean.

Thanks

Is he 404: The almighty muscle man of not-foundness?

Not working for me either.

Oh sorry about that...
How do I make it come up on the screen as part of the post? (kind of a beginner's question)

Well, first of all, make sure it's actually uploaded somewhere that allows for images to be shown off-site (as in, not tripod or geocities or angelfire), then put the url betwenn tags like these

[ img ]http://siteurl.jpg[ /img ]

only make sure the SPACES are gone inside the tags.

If nothing else, upload it here: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/upload/upload.html

If your going for a cartoony stile it's ok, but his torso looks a bit smal and his legs to long. Just make the torso biger and the legs wont look so long...

That would mean you should remove his hands from his pockets and make his face serious

I got a little carried away.  Its not the same style or character anymore.  It doesnt matter anyways...I rushed it.  You may be able to pull a few ideas from this, however.

I may post a paintover closer to the style you want later.

Yes I like that, but it is a bit 'cartoony' because the chin is exagerated and can you please post the pic as just the new one by its self so i can see what you have done up close?
Thanks

Hi,

couldn't help it and did a quick paint-over of your character just to give you some ideas.
This is what I changed:

-made his torso longer and the legs smaller
-made him thinner (he looked a little chubby to me  ;))
-tried to exaggerate his muscles
-tired to make him look a little more disciplined
-changed his pose a little (the position of his feet was a little weird)

Well, it's definitely not finished and he's probably a little too thin (looks a bit like a member of a boygroup), but I'm too lazy to work on it any longer  ;D

Good luck!

He has little girly-man muscles, mornin.   He looks more like a boyscout than a soldier.  He needs muscles!

Yeah, you're right. He looks quite boyish. Now ambition took control of me. I made a paintover of my paintover and tried to make him look a little more manlike with some more muscles.

The changes I made:

- different hair style
- a bit more muscles
- changed his shirt a little (I don't think there are uniforms with crew necks)

Hope this is a better help  ::)

Actually, I prefer the original to any of the paintovers so far.

The original conveys a better sense of strength. He has a more dynamic pose, with his confident smile and his hand on his belt.

However, you should make sure that the pixel size remains constant. It seems that the entire image was scaled up to 200%, then you drew in details.

Some modifications:

Things to consider when you want to create a strong/superhero looking figure:

(i) Make the head small
(ii) Make the shoulders broad
(iii) Make the waist thin
(iv) For a superhero look he must be tall (easily done by reducing the headsize; also don t forget long legs (legs should take up half of the bodylength))

In your version he looks bulky but you must contrast this with thinner sections to accentuate the muscles, otherwise he ll look overweight rather than muscular.

But as commented he does look strong and confident in the initial version.

I think he was going for a look similar to:
Rather than what you did, loominous.  It looks good, though.

Loominous' edit seems nice.
Except the pants make him look a bit... girly?

Hello

Thank you for all of your posts but i'm sort of going for the stocky sype rather than tall and thin, could some one maybe not change the body at all but just improve the detail and shading but please keep posting your ideas about other types of looks he can have. They are all great.
Thanks

I think that the big thing that could really be done to improve the original sprite would be to take his left hand out of his pocket (As has been done in most of the paintovers) and just keep his pose relatively relaxed, to show that he is the laid-back soldier-type guy he is. Also, the shading on his hands and arms used to show the split between his fingers, and his forearm muscles seem a bit superfluous at that resolution.

My big question, really, is: You mentioned that he is a soldier, but what sort of a soldier is he? His outfit doesn't do a lot to tell what sort of setting you have him in, which is by no means a bad thing, but depending on the type of character he is supposed to be, there are some things that could be done to improve on the sprite.

I was assuming when you mentioned 'Captain America' that you were talking about his physicality, as opposed to him being some sort of superhero. My thought was that perhaps he's a regular, present day soldier.

Were he to be a regular soldier, I was wondering a bit about the reverse-fold boots he wears. I know it's an odd point to be picky about, but the rest of his outfit works with that 'soldier' identity. If he were a medieval character, however, they'd fit just fine.

Yes well what I meant by Captain America is not like the superhero but a typical American that is mucley. He is a pilot but is also a soldier. I don't mean to be raciest but I want my guy to be the type of Guy that charges into a battle guns blazing and comes out on top with the white cheesey grin like the Americans. If you know what I mean. He is also a present day soldier.
Thanks

Okay, that works just fine then. I'd say there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of practicality for him to be wearing the boots you've given him, but they do look alright, and I doubt most people are going to nit-pick too much about them.

Regardless, if you want him to look more like an american soldier, the best you could likely do is to put him into fatigues (Camouflage), or some combination of beiges, the green/black combination may be a bit flamboyant for a gung-ho army guy.

I think the cheezy grin works just fine. You could easily keep the stockiness of his body and trim a little off of the sides to make him look less rotund and a little more musclebound. I did a quick paintover to demonstrate one or two of these points, though I left your color scheme intact.

Here they are, side by side for comparison. I fiddled about a bit with the shading on his torso to accentuate the lines of his musculature, and also whited out some of the pixels on the edges, as well as smoothing out some of the more boxy edges.
