I am loving this Flash program!

I drew up a few test backgrounds to try and find my style within Flash for my next game ... and this is the one I've settled on. Tell me what you think. As usual I'm comic and DOTT inspired, I think I've blended the two styles nicely, but you tell me. :)

I'm not so fond of the commic-style graphics, but yours looks good anyway. Maybee the shadows and light-areas are a little strange, but...

I like it! It's very bendy & flash-styled, but of course that is a good thing.

Things I would change:

The bendy lamp-posts. I think they are just a bit too over-the-top. Perhaps (to fit in with the style) you could have them wide at the top & bottom, and have them bend in in the middle.

Also, the back street doesn't look right to me. The perspective may be a little off - it looks as if the road gets wider the further right it gets.

Lastly, I think the truck looks a little too small.

But I think it's a great start! I wouldn't believe you only just got Flash!

Nice. Your style has really improved a lot. You've got a nice view of the building, and wacky shapes combined with darker, almost noir-style shading.

One thing you could improve is in the tones used. The shadows should be more blue and elss saturated than they are, and the areas lit by the lamps should be brighter and more yellow. Using warm and cool tones will give the background some more contrast.

Also, the walls and sidewalk could use more detail. You could show bricks or shingles on the buildings, blemishes or stains on the sidewalk, dirt on the street.. And the awning on the green building could have an address or a sign for the business inside..

And one small thing: the shading on the lamps. If the light is coming from the inside of the lamp, it won't have that shadow just on the right side. The lamp should be darm on both side, and become much brioghter at the middle where you can see the bulb through the frosted glass.

So that's what I thought you might be able to improve. This is really good work so far.

If you want to do DOTT style, don't use black outlines, or remove the outlines altogether. As a matter of preference, I don't care for backgrounds that look "inked". Something.. amateurish about them? I dunno. Maybe it's just the WAY it's inked.

looks goo ionias.

how will the char anims turn out? i imagine they will get all wobbly, but i might be wrong... anyway, nice choise of colors :)

It looks excellent Ionias! One thing I would do is to change the outline colour, atleast I would like to see how it looks without black outlines.

Love the cartoony style, maybe you could add some more details, but other than that it's great ;)
I've got three 'taters, a bucketfull o' pelicans...and satan!

This is a very nice background - the colors and in part the composition remind me of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. Although other people commented on the light post, I think nobody mentioned that they look way too similar. Only the size is different. It does seem like it's the same piece of art that was just rescaled. Try changing the angle of one of them a bit. Other than that, great work.

Those two years just flew by, didn't they?  ;)

Aye, they sure did. Strange this thread would get bumped of all times.

For a second I thought it was kind of a down grade from your recent work, Ionias. Still looks good though. :D
