Title: My newest sketch of a song
Post by: Snake on Thu 05/06/2008 16:49:09
Hey,

I downloaded a sample drum loop off one of those sites where you can buy CDs full of loops and quickly made a song.
I'm actually pretty proud of how it came out.

If you want to hear, click the link below:
It'll lead you to my MySpace page (which I'm rarely on) and the song should load right away. When the guitars fade out and the drums stop, the songs done. I forgot to clip off the excess when I exported the song.

You can tell me what you think, shit on it, I don't care. It recorded a hell of a lot better than the rest of my lame songs ;)

Sounds pretty good. Very well produced, actually. (Maybe could use a little reverb on the drumsample.)

Is take it that's you playing guitar? What equipment are you using?

Yeah, that's me playing.

I'm using a Gibson Epiphone and an old beat-up DOD effects processor. I record straight through the line-in input.

Hm, I never thought of reverb on the drums. Sounds cool. Reminds me of DT (instrumental) by AC/DC - and of course Phil Rudd had an echo effect slammed in there too.

Wow, I like this!  Guitar actually sounds good ran directly through effects! Checked out the other songs on your music account... sounds like you can rock out!

One thing I would personally recommend (if you'd like less fuzzy guitars) would be one of these....

I use a line6 guitarport for my music, but this is a toneport which is updated technology that I have yet to upgrade to, but it's the same software and such. It will do wonders for you! Plus it's not that expensive.

Really? Wow! I knew DOD made good stuff (had a delay of theirs once) but this is just amazing.

TwinMoon:
Haha, I've had the damned thing since junior high and have played it just about every single day since then. Only one bank button works and the foot pedal is worn out so it only works half-way...
I love her.

Suitor:
That's awesome! It is cheaper too. I'll definately look into one of those down the road - got it bookmarked ;)

Thanks for the kind words everybody!

I like it a lot, though maybe add a riff fill, too much repetition is annoying and after the lead ends I feel like the riff should hit twice and then on the third time near the end I just want it to wail at the end, a couple more notes, silence and then a fourth riff and the drummer hits a crash and the lights fly into the audiences eyes and we all go friggin nuts! Then you step out from behind a light with your arm raised, and you're like "This next song is called 'Ode to-"

Er- Anywho... uh, anyone else thirsty? brb...

Sounds great.  About the only thing I could suggest would be more variation, especially with the drums.

Well. There's already quite a bit of reverb on the drums, isn't there? I see no reason for more.

Anyway, sounds real good. What I did think of:

The initial slide thing (I don't really know the terminology in this area) at about 0:08 sounds odd. It weedles around a bit, then takes a tiny break, and then the riff starts. It would probably sound better if it were more connected to the following phrase--you probably know what I mean.

Probably of less importance since it is a sketch, but the ending is a bit awkward (rather uncertain sliding off somewhere at 1:0something, then a break that's a bit too long).

I have the UX1 Toneport and I have to say I'm wicked pleased with it. It won't beat a good amp and effect pedal, but for home recording it's pretty much the best solution I've come across so far that doesn't involve massive investment :)

Quetionable, ProgZ and Eld:
Yes, it is just a sketch I whipped up quickly after remembering that I had a drum sample sitting there on my computer that I never tried anything with :)

It would indeed be longer with more variations if I worked on it - and I will at one point! I really like it.

Since I don't have any more options for drums to add, are there any suggestions on free programs that I can make drum beats with? I don't really want to buy anything since this is strictly for personal fun.

Can't really suggest any particulars, but if I may suggest a direction to go in...

You might want to look for some kind of DAW (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_workstation) (free ones exist, though I have little experience with that) that handles MIDI and preferably also VST instruments. You could do all your recording (and production) inside of it, and get some light, free VST drum sampler. I realize that I'm just spewing a bunch of terms here without elaborating on their meaning, but I trust you'll research (or ask) if it interests you.

Well, I like it. A little(very little) long than it feels right , before the solo guitar comes in, but no reason to change it. Top notch, cool stuff. Really enjoyed it.
