Title: Need Animation suggestions
Post by: Anarcho on Sat 04/12/2004 00:20:56
(http://www.geocities.com/princebusterlw/cropped_lab_image.png)

I seem to have backed myself into a corner here.  This character is looking into this room via a glass panel, and the main character walks in front of him when talking to him.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to easily animate him to show that he's talking.  I tried moving his jaw a bit, but it looked wierd, and I tried moving his head, but it's at such a wierd angle that it just looked like he had a tick.

Any ideas on how I could easily make a talking animation for him?  Or do you think I could get away without doing it?

Thanks

Logan

PS...C&C are welcome too!

Slight jaw movement, quick rapid "head nods" as well as movement of the clipboard.

The jaw should simply go up and down. The head shouldn't nod like a nodding dog, but 'sporadically', in bursts, if you will. Also, when the guy goes to talk to him, have him place hids hands by his side, then when talking he can occasionally move his clipboard about.

this might be a stupid idea,

but what if you drew a reflection of him in the window.... you could make a talk animation perhaps?

That would be pretty time consuming, and I'm trying to finish this game sometime within the next ten years.  It's a good idea, and I would do it if I could, but I think I'll just move the jaw and possibly the hand.

Thanks for that pic Candle, it's helpful.

Perhaps having the character turn their head a little to the left, creating a profile would do the trick. It doesn't even have to be a complete side-on view, but at current with no real facial features to speak of aside from the glasses, it'd be hard to do much otherwise. By having him turn, It'd be easier then to animate the character talking, as the rear 3/4 angle is a real toughie - it'd also seem more realistic that way, as people tend to turn at least a little toward the person they are conversing with, usually.

Here is another quick one

I didn't feel like putting alot of effort into the reflection, it was just to give you an idea of how the head and jaw movements should look

wow progzz, that's a great edit!
If you'd use a talk anim like this, no reflection would be needed, but the reflection is done very well... I'm only not sure about the position of the reflection... shouldn't it be flipped horizontally?

I honestly don't know :P
great work

Wow, that's really great ProgZmax.  That's really helpful.  I think I'll still do it without the reflection, but the head movement is great.
