Title: need c&c on 1st background, please
Post by: on Tue 23/03/2004 21:56:51
hi everybody, here's my first post on the board...
i'd appreaciate any c&c on this background for an adventure. with a look at the final result of this BG i will decide if i'm going to continue this project... if it doesn't convince me, i'm gonna stop this project, because it's a hell lot of work and if i'm not 100% convinced, the time does not equal the result.

ok, i know that there's still a lot wrong, for example the right side of the stair is a bit out of perspective, the snow sucks, the street needs some texture (can someone tell me how to do that, without looking generated?)...

i left the top part blank, it's for the inventory...

the main problem that i have is the color...  i did not think that it would be that difficult to choose the right colors, but it is...

ok now it' your turn...

I like it very much! The image is very detailed and has got a certain style to it. Personally I'd play a little with different thickness on some of the black outlines.

Colours are quite all right in my opinion. I agree that colouring can be underestimated :) It's not always easy to find a good balance. And finding the right contrast can be tricky as well.

Wowzi Wow Wow!! Amazing work!!

I don't like to critique people's work because everyone has their own unique style.

This is wonderful.

Until you make a game in this style, i'm gonna pretend my mouse cursor is a character and is wandering around in this background.

This is a marvelous background...nice style...I'd say theres nothing wrong with the colors...fits with the style nicely...only suggestion I have is to get rid of the straight line on the left side of the wall...here's a suggestion :

I just let the stones bulge out a bit instead of just ending in that straight line...looks better to me....

Hope this helps....

I agree with what Kaaz said, so I didn't take the time to add it in to this paint-over!

Here's my thoughts:
- added 'glass' to windows (car, hotel doors, windows)
- added some more dark shading

I would suggest adding some more shading to give it a slightly more pronounced 3rd dimension.  I'm a sucker for shading.

ok, thanks everybody, you really helped me out...

when i've got some spare time i'm gonna finish the wall and add some shading to objects

btw. erwin, what do you mean with playing with thickness of outlines? i work with photoshop and have set the color layer set to "multiply" so that the original drawing shines through... i think that it looks more organic and not drawn by a computer... or am i wrong?... here's a picture on how it looked before, which do you prefer?

Nice picture!

In that close-up
- the wall and awning definitely look better on the left
- the 23 and the lamps I think look better on the right

The snow looks weird on the bushes - shouldn't it be on top of the bush, not the side? I'd expect some snow on the grass, the bike parks, etc too.

i like it, very nice background and i love your style. |I think what erwin meant by playing with the line thickness was to say on a curving corner make the line get wider, it add's overall smoothness.

But to me i dont think this is nessesary. the background looks great as it is.

nice one
