Post by: der.uwe on Tue 15/03/2005 16:42:31
Hi there,

now it is the character. today i wanted to start with walking animation. i cant use the character as he is in that background so i played around, but I'm not very lucky, what do you say...

You've got your front view, why not starting to animate it? Use any of the 4, they are all very good.

That subway train looks really cool, only one thing about perspective:
Right now, the part of the chairs you sit on isn't horizontal (butt lower than knees).
They should look more like the couch in your first bg.

yeah, you are right. i was lucky finishing it, and then had no motivation to fix it

It'll be nice to see someone of African descent as the lead in an adventure game. Actually, is this a first?

Earwig is Angry was the first, I think, big b.

I enjoy the sprites, I just wish there was more shadow or play with colour to add to the depth of the train image, the television image is depth..full... but the train one isn't, in my opinion.

Would probably help to add a background outside the windows, but you might want this added later as an animation in the game?
Also I'm not too fond of the outline on the plywood dividers. It looks a bit too dark.
The poles are very severely shaded. Don't think one side would be percieved as black inside a train with light running all along the roof.
And last but not least... A subway train with NO SLASHED SEATS!??!?!?! Where does the game take place? In Shangri-La? ;)

Great stuff! Would love these graphics in a game!

I just liked those colors more... Oh, and I added the beginning of his shirt right under his throat...

This is a really great style you have... Almost dumb for somebody with such lowskills like me to do a paintover...

Whatever...

Been a long time since I posted some help in the CL ...

- added some division details to the floor
- moved the pole closer to the top seats
- added foreground poles to add depth

I would suggest adding some shadows.  The shading is good, but there are no shadows.  That would really help the image I think.

I'm just posting this here, because I kinda imitated your style, although I drew him on my own!

tomorrow, in germany its 10:30 pm, i'll do some changes and post them.
and yes, it will be animated, i hope.

and about my style, it isnt really my style, i also made from a sprite of evil, we discussed it here:

Wow, the character is nicely done along with the backgrounds. But I would go with Darth's sugestions. That'll make it a lot better.

It is interesting, I thought that a character with his neck placed and tilting in one direction, would look wrong, but in fact it looks very natural. I say keep the one-sided neck guy (original).
I am just wondering, do you just put the characters in the backgrounds to check how they match, or is it that you don't know that you can have them animated as separate sprites?

just to look how they match and for comparison.
i make them with photoshop, with the layers no problem.
(a tiny little programm like mspaint with layers, and just some more features would be great, wouldnt it)

and about the original guy. imagine how i would be look when he walks in this pose.

Hey der.uwe, i ve got just the perfict program for you. try ArtGem.
It has layers, and if you turn of anti-aliesing its great for your style backround and sprites. (or maybe EVILS style sprites) it will fit on a floppy,(and that is a very imprtent thing for me) so it s small enough. It isn't completley like paint, but it just might work for you.

This is great.
Add some shadows to that train and it'll be greater still!

In the 3rd and 4th images, I think his elbows are to far down his arm..

hey, i downloaded artgem and tried it a bit. the programm takes getting used to but i think when you know the shortcuts its very good to work with. (correct grammar? i dont know)
i like it

uh, purely for grammatical reasons (I am assuming you were asking if it was the 'right' thing to say, rather than just saying 'I don't know and don't care'):

There's nothing wrong with saying it's very good to use, but people will usually talk about it in terms of how hard it was to use.
ie - it's very easy to use  OR it's very hard to use

Now, for the art, I absolutely love it. The subway style is extremely atmospheric, however I'd still agree about maybe adding a background through the windows. Even if you're in a tunnell, you usually still see the grey blur of bricks or something similar.

And I like your 4th sprite the best. Maybe his elbows are too far down, but I think overall he's the best looking

the subway background will be animated, outside the windows. its just a job for another day, which is far away.

fantastic news to hear, indeed :)

you could also use the shakescreen command when the subway is moving. not too violent, but still, i think that would add a lot.

but perhaps, if you were to do move around during the train moving, then maybe not shake the screen.

Love the style and the characters. I'm guessing the first image is only good to be used on cut-scenes, seeing as how the characters have shadows and all, i don't see how that would translate into actual gameplay.

I noticed you're a kubrick fan, and you also have a name referencing Uwe Boll.
I do believe you rock sir! ;)

Cool background and nice-looking character.  I can't really reccomend any improvements as its 1000x better than i could do...
