Title: Need help with background
Post by: BerserkerTails on Sat 26/06/2004 22:30:08
Okay, I've been working on another background for my game, and I need some help.

Here's the background as it is. Thing is, I don't know how to make the water look more... Water like, without sacrificing the cartoony/simplistic style I'm going for. I've tried a few things, but they haven't worked out. Can anyone help me?

i like the background a lot, the only thing that bothers me 9apart from the water) is the blackoutlines on the tree's i think you should do what you've done with everything else and make them darker version of the block colour.

apart from that its lovely

Yes, do like LostTraveler did. but make lines shorter and have different colors, like white and brighter blue.

Here's another quick paintover with some ideas.

I'd suggest varying the brightness of ths stars, looks more natural.
Blur the horizon a bit, there is usually some fogging going on, and the water should reflect the sky anyway, so the horizon should be so clear.
The land looks too bright, and too colourful, make it darker and bluer.
Give the rocks and trees some shading, and turn the contrast up, at night there is usually high contrast.
Antialias the rocks a bit, and give the moon some glow.Ã,  Make the sea and sky get darker the further they are away from the moon.

Woah. Is that... Is that still MY background?

Seriously though, I love the edit you've done, but I can't use it. It doesn't fit the style of my game. However, I'll try to incorporate a few of the ideas.

well I don't know what kinda stile your aming at. Maybee if you would show us more of your work.

But the background looks good as it is actualy.  The only thin bothering me is that there is no detail to the water and to much detail to the rocks. Try to even them out. And is it me or do the wooden parts of the trees look to fat (sorry. This is embarasing but I couldn't remember how to say this  :-X :P). Either make the wooden part thiner or the leafy part biger.

Latest attempt, fixed trees and messed with Water. Viktor, for examples of my style, check out my game's topic here. (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=9131.0)

Sorry, but now the water looks kind of flat, try shrinking the water texture only on the y axis, and try making the reflection of the moon like Lost Traveler suggested. Also some moonlight highlihts on the rocks and foliage would look really nice.

Latest attempt. Still haven't added the moon reflection, I want to get the water right first. Does this water look good to you?

I tried too...

...but this is probably too different for you... the style and tech, I mean. It's pretty dark too.

Try to make the water more wavy.

I took a stab ...
- I rather liked the water you used on your latest
- I added some distance to the horizon of the water (by darkening and blending)
- added a gradient to the sky (not sure you'd want that)
- added in moon reflection (just a brush on dissolve with a motion blur added)
- altered the stars a little as well

Hope it helps!

Sweet DM, that looks awesome! I'm definatley going to take some of the ideas in that one, I should have the (hopefully) Final BG up soon.
