Title: New art?
Post by: Matt Frith on Wed 27/08/2003 20:00:01
So I decided i really need to improve my art but i need to improve effects such as shadows and lighting.  I threw together a random scene and i wonder if you guys can help me with the effects:

The gutter has no grate on it - I already fell in it today... :P

Also, it'd be nice to see some darker shading on one of the walls.

But yeah, great job. Me likey.

This is kinda hard to explain,

shading.     for each side of walls you want it to be slightly darker/lighter than the last. The bendy light you have on the wall is really good judt make it a bit more prominant, make it darker.

layout.       I think the forground lampost? needs to be more round and could do with a glass case for the light. As for the crossing light do some more shading on the light and add a metal case for the bottom of the glass, also make the button smaller and shade it.

Last thing, the two 'e's' and the 'r' on derks need the horizontal lines to be inline with the top of the 'I' in discount.

Thats it ! it might seem like a lot but its mainly just shading/ adding detail to the bits you've rushed.

hope that helps

In film, the main light in a scene (often the sun) is often called the key light. In this scene the key light is inside the shop. If this is a night time scene, that's fine, however the outer walls are too well lit: they need to be far darker with only the window frames well lit.
Also, while sunlight will cast a window-frame shaped shadow on the floor of an interior, light from an interior will rarely cast this sharply on the ground.
