Been a long time...

Anyway, I have this

I know there are a few issues with perspective, which is one thing i always have difficulty with. But as for style and composition, what are your opinions.

Thanks

Hey! Your style looks really similar to mine! :D *high fives*

The door looks a little unfinished, as do the hallways. More details perhaps, and deeper shading at the ends of the hallways to suggest that they don't lead to dead ends? (Assuming, of course, that they don't lead to dead ends.)

The green object in the corner is visibly a couch or a seat of some sort, but it's not immediately apparent what sort, and which part of the seat are we looking at?

For perspective, I pass on the highly useful tip that was given to me by someone else on these forums, and recommend that you try designing your backgrounds in Sketchup: http://www.sketchup.com/index.php?title=2 . In your pic, the thing that immediately jumps out at the user is the skewing of the lines on the counter. They should still look like they're running parallel to the edge of the counter from that angle - but I guess someone else with a better grasp of perspective than myself would be more suitable to advise you on that.

The 'hallways' do lead to dead ends. There are going to be little booths for people to sit in.

And the green thing is a couch, which i know is very difficult to work out at first.

Since you mentioned having trouble with perspective I did some line drawing over the bg that may help.  The vanishing point is the blue dot underneath the light on the center wall.

The main thing I see with your background is the curving that happens near the bottom.  It looks alright for not being in perspective, but seeing the lines might help you anyway.

Ah, ok. You might want to move that back wall a little closer to the front then - the distance is misleading, and makes the booths look longer than you probably intended them to be (thus my mistaking them for hallways).

But Ryan.... Why this "Grundislavian" change? Your previous style (Black outlines, minimalistic backgrounds in soft colours, a bit like Rodekill) was very cool and effective... Have you get a tablet or something?
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

I do indeed. i have actually had it for a while. need to experiment more i think.

Anyway, the minimalist style was only cause it was quick and easy.

I'll agree with the rest. I thought Grundislav posted the picture at the first place. Anyway , the perspective might be wrong or strange but nobody would look at it if you pointed them elsewhere. Example if you put many characters no one will say ooh  the persp. is bad!! They will look at the characters first.. And anyway I like it. Needs some furnitures..

What program are you working in? If it's something layer-friendly like the GIMP or Photoshop, you might want to use an independent layer for lighting. Then again it would impact your ability to do the smears and smudgy distortions that are part of this style.

Overall I like the feel of it.

Layabout

I did actually use a separate layer for shadows. I think the biggest problem with it is that I didn't finish it properly. I was going with the idea of getting feedback before it was fully finished.

Like the lightning sure gives a feel that makes you want to just stay there...
