Update Jan-27-05: See reply #10

I just finished this police officer for my upcoming game. It's a non-playable character:

What do you think? (Shadows, colours, pose, etc???)

Totoro

I like him a lot. A cool combination of a moody cop and an alien. But maybe the sunglass could look a bit different. The color of the glasses should be different, and the legs of it should be better visible at the side of his head and ears (although I am not sure if he has ears...) :)

JimmyShelter

I'd make the sunglasses different.

Glasses like this really look like 'cop glasses' to mee:

For the rest, great picture!

HillBilly

I think his hand looks kinda wrong. Maybe not let all the fingers show fully, or pose it as he's grabbing something(Would look nice on a cop)?

Vel

I think that what appears to be the frame of the glasses( the thingy that goes behind the ear) should be placed lower, not above the glasses.

First off I would like to say this is a great image, very clean, and well drawn.  The more you show of this game, the more excited I am to see it's final product.

Now, with the critique, there are two problems that I see in terms of perspective. The first is the hand, it looks like it is turnedin a relaxed "apish" position, but the arm shows it to be at it's side (does that make sense?) I suggest putting the hands to show all the fingers and turn the angle so they look to be more uniform with the waist.

The second I see that is a bit off is the perspective of the officer's gut. The way it looks was as if he was standing profile to the left, but his legs and position is slightly diagonal. My suggetion is distribute the weight more to the right side of the picture(which would be the character's left side) so that everything is not one sided and fits more perspectively. this as well changes the angle of his tie and badge.

This, though looks like a great character with a lot of life, I can't wait! keep up the good work

Here's a quick crappy paintover, I only fixed his jawline a bit, forgot to remove the background color.

I think that's a part of his cap, not of his glasses.

Maybe try making his shirt lighter to heighten the contrast. I think some cops wear short sleeve white shirts and black slacks.

BB: Well, it really depends on where your cop is from. The police in Ontario wear Kevlar vests as part of their regular uniform- even traffic cops and the guy that comes around to schools to say "Don't do drugs!" wear bullet-proof vests.  Cops from Las Vegas wear brown, and New York cops wear uniforms like Erwin has drawn.

Or so TV has told me. It might have been lying.

As for the actual picture, the tie doesn't seem to be following the line of his stomach. I tried a bit of a paint over. It's crap, because I wasn't really trying that hard.

Basically what I did was move the tie over quite a bit, so that it's more in line with the way the feet and head are facing. I also changed the curve of it, trying to make it sit on top of his belly, rather than being a part of it. Whether or not I succeeded is your decision.

Of the two, I prefer the original version of the gut and tie, although I do think there's a slight perspective issue with it. I think the issue is that we see too much of the gut to the left of the tie, when it should be sort of fading away from our eyes at this angle. I don't know if that helps you or not, though. I'd also like to say that in general, this all looks fantastic and I am very jealous. ;)

Edit: spelling.

A little update: I've made a walking animation, and I changed the original character just a little bit. I worked on these all day. Animation isn't done yet, but it's finished enough to show it here, I guess:

What do you think?

Yesss... I see it is good... I like it... If I were you, i shouldn't start modifying it heavilly, because EVERYTHING can be improved forever, but if we do that, we would never finish a game...

So, the only big bug is in the hand, IMO. The first, final, and the one before final look weird and have a "jump". With the tow last ones, seem easy to fix, make a little finger to them.

For the first one (the frame with the hand more "advanced") dunno, I see a jump, maybe it's made because of the previous frame, maybe they both collide... hope to help.

And ah! The shadow when the hand go to the right... make it more regular, it dissapears (I think it does in the third frame)
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

You know what ... I'm getting to the point where I no longer want to view your threads!Ã,  The anticipation is killing me!!

Fantastic work on this sprite ... it's so full of character and style.Ã,  The walking animation (though in need of a few (very) minor refinements) is wonderful!

The tie, in the standing pose ... I think Dragonrose was, in a way, correct.Ã,  But I think the whole thing should move over.Ã,  Move the neckline of the tie up closer to the edge.

The hat in the walking animation ... the 'bulge' in the front looks different than in the standing frame.

Other than that I, once again, stress my anticipation for this game!

Keep on keepin' on!

I've noticed that the leg movement looks very similar to Brett's walkcycle. I assume it's a paintover?
Looks good on him, just be careful not to use the same walkcycle for all characters but use some slight variations, depending on the character.

But this looks totally sweet, I love it!

Actually, it isn't a paintover. I drawed all the frames from scratch, so I'm sure his legs must bend differently in most frames. However, the timing and flow of the animation do seem very alike. Truth is, I don't really know how to change that. The only different walk I know is a female one, but that's it. Most animation tutorials only show a very generic, basic walk.

Anyway, this NPC has only a very brief appearance. I don't think I will change too much, considering the time he's on screen.

Exactly the words I was looking for. :)

Nah, I wasn't implying that, he looks great.
It's just something to keep in mind for the future.

Scummbuddy

His belly needs to twist a bit when walking. Showing more when his right leg is out, which would twist his belly out to see us more, and then hide more when his left leg is out and that would hide more.

Hope you understood.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Bombadil

WOOOW!
I wish I could draw like that!
The walkcycle looks great, but I would add some movement to the tie and to the body. Maybe the head should move a little too.
What needs fixing is what Farlander told you about the hand.
Maybe the "^" thing on his [it] shoulder should move a little bit more, because the arm moves a lot and this barely moves...

Great great job!

Krazy

The stripe on his shoulder should probobly change perspective, it looks weird staying the same the whole time  :o And maybe add a little head bobbing to make him look a bit more natural? Other than that great work!

The head bobbing is a function most walking people utilize, however: not everyone! I had a neighbour once, who walked excatly like this guy here, and it was always a faboulous sight! It shows off a certain kind of pride and attitude, and I believe it's a characterisation who would suit a police officer perfectly (my neighbour was a farmer btw, but he had an incredible amount of sheep) - it would also apply to a lot of security guards, decorated military personell and so on. All these probably have a hurting neck after a good days work walking around in their pride posture, but that's the flipside they are prepared to live with.

I think he's perfect.
