Title: Newest background - No Magic Required
Post by: Moneytalks on Sun 04/09/2005 00:17:14
Well, here's a screen shot of my newest background/room for my game, No Magic Required.

What do you guys think?
I'm sure there is something a little wrong with the place the path leads to, not too bad, but it's been really bugging me!
( I do plan to move the game screen down, in order to center it!)
Comments on that and anything else please, remember it is to be in keeping with the rest of the game, found here - http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22295.0
Thanks :)

p.s. Here is the background outside of the game:

I don't think there's anything to change now because it fits the style of your game very well (and I must say it looks much better than the other bg's in your GIP topic). You could add something to the empty part on the right side of the picture though. Like flowers and bushes (and maybe a tree). It looks quite empty now.

I so totally agree Ã, :D :D \,,\

It's a bit, or a lot actually dreamlike BG. I like it. Just don' tmake the chars sharp. I like the fuzzy feeling

How about small bricks that make up the door frame of the door, topping it off with the keystone.

If you can't be "bothered" to edit the image ... why'd you post it in the Critics Lounge?

I'd say it's a functional enough background.

Though the "frame" effect around it doesn't really work for me.  If that's an effect you're going for then it doesn't matter much what I think.  I prefer backgrounds that, unless they have an obvious "stopping" point, continue off the edges of the screen.  Again, just personal preference.

Sorry for the can't be bothered comment, was just about to leave for dinner at my nans. And yeah, that is an effect that reccurs throughout the game, so sorry about that as well. But thanks for the criticism, it's appreciated!

I think there are some major issues with this picture, frankly.

First of all, the composition is a bit boring. You simply show too little of the important architecture/landscape, and too much of just a green lawn. This makes it hard to tell what kind of building we're looking at, what side of it we see, how it's situated, what the surroundings look like, etc.

Secondly, the perspective is off. The brick wall has a vanishing point which lies somewhere on the grass. It should - given that the wall is parallel to the ground - lie somewhere around the horizon.

Thirdly, the outlining is too thick and black. Experiment by making it thinner, and using darker colours instead of pitch black.

Lastly, I think you could also ditch that blurry edge thingy. It doesn't work at all, it just gives the picture some gloomy undefined atmosphere.

Also, don't post JPGs. Use PNG format instead.
If you're posting a bg with lots of black area, remove it from the pic, to save image size on pointless areas.
