This is my first background to my first game. The game takes place in japan but as you can see theres no obvious connection to japan. So here is what I want help with: I want the scene to look more japanese and I also want to add details, shadows, vegetation and maybe textures.
So please C&C my background and feel free to edit it!

Here is a complete remake of my previous background (you can find the old one here
"http://www32.brinkster.com/oaklake/upload/egohouse.jpg"<-copy link).

C&C Please!!
I don't know why, but mountains remind me of japan. and transparent sliding doors
Im not quite sure but the houses look too "western"
try to make the roof look like a pagoda or something.
like this:

Hope it looks better this time
Hey, your background looks great I think, but if you need some pointers I'll try to help out. These links try to show the design of a traditional japanese home, but may not be exactly what you're looking for in the design.

Link #2 ::: Traditional Japanese Home 2 (http://kokorocountryhouses.com/largenikko.asp)

I hope all that helps & isn't at the same time overwhelming, just how I do my homework :)
EDIT: I added this image. What I did is simply change the appearance of the house. It's no longer two story(not sure what a two story version would look like really), & I added the altered coloring, red bars around the building & the screen doors(or glass). It's not really 3-d or whatever anymore but you get the idea. The wide look to the roofs, intricate designs in the roofing, lots of japanese-ish things around the setting. That will really help to pull the viewer towards japan and away from a western point of view I think.
I've never been to japan, & I can read/write very well but have trouble speaking it. This is my best guess you could say. Good luck! If you need more examples(photos of houses for example), let me know I can whip more up...

Thanks Menaze for your beautiful art :D. And I agree it looks to western. Im going to change the roof. And thanks Moresco for the links, I really like that crazyenglish.jpg. ;) Maybe I will use that sign somewhere in the game.
But I still needs help with details, shadows, vegetation and textures.
Here's more scenery:
Japan photo 1 (http://phototravels.net/japan/photo-gallery/japanese-nature.html)
Japan photo 2 (http://www.worldwildlife.org/wildworld/profiles/photos/pa/pa0511a.html)
These photos will give you an idea. Not much there, and really only vegetationish stuff. There's so much more to be found, use google & you can't go wrong.
Remake!!
Well I didnt like the old one so heres the new one. It lack some detail but that will be added.
Howdy.. Just took a couple mins with your latest image to give you a possible sketch for the house..

tell me if you're interested in going this route, i'll send ya the outline to draw in
Looks great Xackery. I like the roof, gives the house a more japanese look. Please send!
Note I didn't draw this, so don't give me credit. I just basically did a search for outlines of a house that seemed to match your pic and did some color selection and threshold tweaks to get the above image. PM'd ya.
