Title: Ocean Shop
Post by: Evil on Tue 29/06/2004 05:37:45
Viktor's background totally inspired me to do some work. It didnt turn out much like his though. More like a mix of his and Darth's styles. I need help on some wood textures and ocean reflections.

Not bad! I like it but somehow it seems empty. My advice is that you add some more stuff and maybe do something about the empty sea.

I suggest trash in the bin and a small peice of crumpled paper beside it. I reckon this will make a difference.

Thats what I was gonna suggest. Places like this normally become packed with trash towards the end of the day from all the people that go there.

did a little paintover, hope it helps. I
- FIlled the trash can up and gave it some shadow.
- Added some texture to the wood
- Added some haze to the horizon

* Shadows are too strong, try to soften them.
* Sky is too non-gradient too, soften this.
* I made a tutorial about wood texturing (http://www.hot.ee/increator/textures.htm), maybe it'll help - unless you're using MSPaint
* halfway of the work is done, what you need is to texture everything now and maybe add some more details to big plain area ta the bottom

Here's a little edit:

Here's what I changed:
-added ZootyFruits' trash can
-added window blinds
-changed the thing above the window (can't remember how it's called)
-changed the sky gradient, but now it isn't dusk anymore
-there was some emptyness at the right part of the BG, so i moved the background piers there, added some lights and land to it
-added highlights and texture to the wood
-made the water color a bit brighter closer to the shore
-added reflection to the water using random strokes with line tool
-added stars to the sky, outlined a few with light blue and yellow colour
-applied shading

The next thing I would have done is add some texture to the concrete part and some railings on the closer pier, but I don't have much time right now.

the strange thin about you edit is that there is no light source and jet I can see shadows. I doubt that the park on th epier would produce so much lite to make such a big shadow...

EDIT: Another thing I noticed. The lamp in the room is lit but no light is faling thrugh the window. All I can see is shade even though there is a light in the window.

Actually, the main lightsource is the moon which is higher in the sky, so it isn't visible in the background.

For that, I have no excuse.

If so shouldn't there be a reflection of the moon in the sea? Any excuse?  ;D :P

Cool!!11!one! a door with a window half way down it  ::) j/k  ;D

Seriously though, I think there should be a light source (e.g. the moon) and shadows... and a reflection of the moon etc blah blah blah...

even if that would be so. The moon even on a bright night as shown in the picture. The moon isnt so bright that the light would be so strong (i should know i'm a scout and I am used to be under the stars)
Maybee if you would make the part of the floor that is bright a bit darker.

EDIT: I almoast forgot. If the moon is the main light source. It realy must be way up high in the scy so that we can't see it. But then the shadow wouldn't be so sharp (long) it would definetly be shorter.

here's my go at it. So that you won't say that I only criticise  ;)

What I changed:
- the sky color
- the sea color
- added the moons reflacion
- added  star reflactions
- shortened the shadows
- fixed the reflacions of the theme park lights

I know it's not the best edit, but I tried my best  :P

I like your original orange horizon + ferris wheel - It looked really great. If you soften some edges and added a bit of depth (to the windows ect) it would look really cool.
