This is a BG for the mafia thug. I fear the perspective is off :-\
I also don't know what to do with the shading.
Hmmm... yeah, the coffeetable on the left looks a bit out of perspective... it's legs, actually. The making the front legs shorter...
The gun and ammos seem flat, and I insist that some shading is required.
And the photo needs some background.
The desk would be better if the horizontal lines were straight.
Apart from this, not a bad BG. And the perspective is wrong, but just a bit. And so this is not disturbing at all (the little table seems lower in the distance than it should be).
I knew it. Thanks, the coffee table was annoying me and I didn't know what was wrong with it.
I'll fix now.
Huh... I don't know why, but at the first look it reminded me a scene from "Prisoner of Ice". Strange. ;)
Everything looks a bit flat at this picture. As I always say... try adding some lightning (let's say a moon light) from the outside and some shadows inside the office. Something is wrong with perspective as well (look at those buldings behind the window). Blah, blah, blah ;)
I edited that gun.
Okay.
- I took the table out and replaced it with a plant.
- Added shadows
- Added light on wall
(http://img278.echo.cx/img278/6894/office33la.png)
What do you think?Ã, :-\
[EDIT]------
Improved.
Looks better, the plant looks a bit dead though and the shading of the desk is different from the shading of the plant and the light doesn't seem to have much effect on the wall.
Quick n dirty edit:
If the plant were in good health it's leaves would point upward.
Shading on all objects. Look at the trajectory of the light.
Thats looking quite good there Largo P.
Oh, very nice edit, Largo!
Hmm... I'm vaguely astonished of that armchair behind the desk. Isn't it too big? (arms are situated too higher). Or isn't the desk too small? I'm only nitpicking. ;)
Anyway, it's quite cool, to see you improving that bg...
Curtains?
Okay,
(http://img207.echo.cx/img207/2339/office51wh.png)
- Fixed lighting
- Added curtains
- Added glow on desk lamp
- Put in more shadows
- Reflection on window added
The thing is, I'm not happy with the glow on the desk lamp. But I don't know what to change. Any suggestions?

Largo's paint-over is a good example.
Yeah, and Largo has more realistic reflection on window too. I like his shadings too. ;)
We all like largo's paint over :)
About the curtains, they look a bit to wobbly to me.
(damn english ;) )
I agree that Largop edit is he best, but still I think that the doc's picture needs a background (is it a photo made in front of a bordeaux screen?).
And another thing I noticed is that either the window has no glass at all, or it's a very huge one! In fact the glass (if ther's one) seems to be as wide as the wall (which instead is quite thin, for a building wall).
The thing is less noticeable with the curtains, but still the glass seem too wide.
I suggest including it in the wall's width (with my english I can't explain this properly).
Other things are the curtain's shading (wrong) and the lamp's glow (just remove it).
I think that picture doesn't need no background, because it won't be suitable for office then IMO. Or just change it to white. :-\
What about that glass, Abisso... why just don't draw it?:
Hope I've understood you well. ;)
Perfectly! ;D
I didn't draw it cause I use Internet from my university, and there they don't have Painting programs (apart from Paint, which maybe in this situation would have been enough).
Well, I didnt expect this level of liking for my paintover. Thanks, I guess. :)
Good to see you improving the BG. We're getting somewhere now.
Concerning stuff:
-When the lamp is on, everything glows. The center of the lamp should be the brightest, not the edges.
-Curtains generally wobble strictly in the Z-dimension, so to speak, never the X or the Y, unless there's wind or something.
-Reflections tend to span the entire window, or fade. They dont end abruptly.
-And the stuff the others said.
I like the mood in this scene. Any info on the game you're gonna be using it in?
Okay...
I gave the window reflection a go, but still not happy with it.
- Straightened curtains
- Changed lamp light
- Added chord from lamp
- Put glass bottom in
[EDIT]-----
To answer your question Largo; It's a modern mafia type game, the main character is a Mafia Thug
(http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21023.0/) that needs to get a load of money from a man that owes it to his Uncle. So he goes on a mission to get it back... But this is the critics lounge not the "AGS Games in Production". So i'll leave it at that.Ã, ;)
Looks good.
The curtains look much better now. I find that the reflection on the window looks more like rain, you should try to replicate the reflection Largo made.
And a small thing, the wire of the lamp suddenly stops at the bottem of the desk, where does it go to?
EDIT:
Oops now I see it, my monitor's brightness was to low.
Mafia? Sweet! Hope to see more info pop up soon...
Good mods, the curtains look good and the reflection is ok. I like it. Keep it up.
- added shading to the front of the desk
- fixed the desk's shadow
The buildings outside the window appear to be connected to one another (or VERY close together). I circled in blue the area I'm referring to. While not as obvious in your latest version(s), due the curtains and window details, it's still there! I would suggest seperating them a bit.
Hope it helps.
Okay...
- Fixed gap in buildings
- Added shading similar to Darth's
- Changed shadows
[EDIT]--------
Just changed width of the building in the window... It looked way to skinny
Looks very good, but the plant still seems a bit dead to me.
EDIT:
Ive changed the painting...
And the character on the painting looks more like an workoholic acountant than mafia boss.
Yes, that's right, Boris. :)
Good boss paint-over, Redrum. I've tried to make my own, but the result probably won't fit the style of the whole picture. Anyway, take a look:

2x:
It's a quick-made scrap, but maybe 'll be useful ;)
That looks very good, but as you said it wouldn't fit in his style very well....to bad, it looks so cool :P
Thanx. On the other hand, some paintings styles can be a bit different than a style of the proper image. But yes, sometimes it looks strange. Anyway, it's a decision of the creator. :)
Quotesome paintings styles can be a bit different than a style of the proper image.
Yes that was just what I was thinking about. If it looked exactly like in the game it would be more of a photo than a painting.
Hey thanks for the feed back and ideas.
I sort of want the plant dead-ish. They are after all mafia bosses and I don't know if they care much for plantsÃ, ;)
Also the photo is of the main character's uncle. I took the face of the main character and made it an older version of him. (Family look similar)
Other than the dead-ish plant and the photo what else do you think is not right in the background? Perspective? Lighting?
QuoteIf it looked exactly like in the game it would be more of a photo than a painting.
Yes it is a portrait photo of someone, not a painting.
The vase of the plant looks a bit weird, more like a bag or something.
And if it's a mafia's boss office it looks a bit to neat. Maybe adding some more paper on the desk or an ashtray with lit cigar. Maybe you should add more 'photos' of family members, a bit like a wall of fame, people who did something for the family.
I'm not sure if this was already said, but have you noticed that the windows in the houses in the background aren't in line with the roof...
How about this:
Now, imagine him saying: "Forge'bout it"
It's actually spelled "Fugghet aboudit"
Ok, thanks. I had never written it before.
Ah Stefano that reminds me. The suit in the 'photo' doesn't look like a suit, more like a halflife scientist outfit.
Sorry to bring this old topic up but I have just changed a few things.
- Changed plant shadow
- Chaged picture to Stefano's idea
- Added mess
- Changed outside windows.
What do you think?
Looks better
Ive made a quick edit:
Looks good, but what kinda of office only has a few pieces of paper on the desk. Imagine a standard office, research it, you might fins a filing cabinet, telephone, computer, waste paper basket, paper shredder, water cooler, coat stand.
Another thing, the pens look too neat on the desk. It's 11.30 now but I'll try to do an edit on the image tommorow.
Meh, I thought I'd do it before I forgot:
A bit rushed, but you get the idea. Looks more like an office I think and less empty.
