Title: Opinions about a 3D/2D character
Post by: Joe on Fri 06/08/2010 16:40:41
Please tell me whay you think of it, it's my 1º 3D character, as you can see I'm using a cartoon texture, but i find it quite plastic made...

Obviously this is not a normal walking view, I want opinions about the character, not about the movement.

Opinions storm please :)

Looks really nice actually. "Plastic" might not be a bad thing, if you're making a comedy, this is just fine.

And for a first model, it's really good. Except that if he's sneaking, his feet might be inward.

Really like the rendering style - reminds me somewhat of the Runaway games. Two things strike me though:

1) The contrast is quite low. Unless this model was lit specifically for low-light scenes, I would boost the lights for a wider tonal range. You can always desaturate/darken by using in-game lighting values. I think the very blue jeans could be part of the problem since his torso/arms/face are so similar in tone and blend together in comparison.

2) I can't tell from the animation whether his eyes are part of the face texture or separate elements, but it looks quite odd that his gaze bobs up and down along with his head. At the moment it seems that he's eying something above him - which could be the case, I guess. If not, and the eyes are modeled separately, try to fix them on a point straight ahead of him.

Other than that, I'm very impressed both with the modeling and the animation. Excellent work! Wish I was that good and didn't have to resort to Poser characters (at least for the moment) :)

Thanks for those comments, writing down, the ayes are separate elements so I'll redirect when I have to.

Thanks, but thats the problem... I'm not making a comedy, I'm making the Deluxe version of SAW II, still thick plastic isn't a bad thing.

T-Rex arms. Knees are bending outwards. Normal people don't do this. If you are making a horror game, his facial structure is too cartoony to be taken serious. Look at some anatomical reference. (www.3d.sk if you have money for reference, if not check out some 3d forums).

btw what modelling package/rig are you using?
